New X-Country Initiative

Hunting is perfectly legal in this country, redhead, and meets are held nationwide several times a week, all within the law. What is illegal is to hunt [or kill] a fox with more than a pair of hounds. Of course there is no exclusion from racing of horses that have been hunting; how could you explain point to pointing and hunter chasing [for which it is a compulsory to have qualified on the hunting field] otherwise?

Thanks for the info Shadow. Not being involved in that side of life, don't hear the finer points and only what the media chooses to tell.

The 2010 Crystal Cup series culminates at Cheltenham on Friday and it's good to see a number of foreign entries for the final race of the series.

Shame that the likes of Enda Bolger have chosen not to take in races outside of Punchestown and Cheltenham, though Denis Murphy took the Anjou Loire Challenge with Another Jewel and has also taken The Speedy Man to contest races in the series

The foreign entries for Friday are as follows:

Quezac De La Roque (Francois Cottin) - Winner of the latest race in the series the Grand-Steeplechase Cross-Country De Compiegne at Compiegne last month, this was his first start in a XC chase and he won very easily indeed under French Champion jockey David Cottin. Prior to this he'd been racing in conditions and graded chases at Auteuil this autumn where his runs included a win in a £21,000 race in September.

Lutin Des Bordes (Josef Vana) - Ex-French contender now in training with the Czech steeplechasing legend, he's won each of his last two starts, both at the Italian track Merano first over 2m 5f and latterly in the Premio Delle Nazioni over 3m 6f on heavy ground.

Natchez De Kerser (Patrice Quinton) - Has had just one start in a XC Chase when finishing eighth behind Nuis Rochelaise in the 2009 running of the Loire-Anjou Challenge, he was absent for a year following that start and has since been kept to regulation chases with little success in his three starts in 2010 including when pulled-up behind Rushwell at Auteuil in October (a race in which Quezac De La Roque was fifth). Won a listed 2m 5f Chase worth 95,000 Euro's in May 2008 and was third in a 240,000 Euro Grade 2 the following month.

Il En Reve (Milan Theimer) - Ex-Irish and British contender currently trained in the Czech Republic. Has form that ties in with a number of the other continental contenders but was a triple figure price when falling behind Lutin Des Bordes at Merano, was Pulled Up in the Velka Pardubice in October before mistakes took their toll when he tired back into fourth at the same course later that month. His most recent outing came when falling four out in the race won by Quezac De La Roque at Compiegne, for which he was 88/1.

La Musica (Jerome Follain) - Vastly experienced mare with plenty of experience in these sort of races to her name, started 2010 with a victory in a XC Chase over just shy of 3m at Compiegne in April before filling the runners-up berth at the unique course at Lyon-Parilly a month later. The latter half of her season has been blighted by non-completions including when falling early on in a XC Chase at Dieppe in July and when leading in the race won by Quezac De La Roque at Compiegne last month. Sandwiching those two starts she started favourite at Pompadour but could finish only third of the seven runners being beaten 19 lengths.

Perlestigle (Jerome Follain) - Has been racing mainly in minor XC races throughout her career - won her latest start at Saumur back in October to record her first victory from 14 career starts. She's been racing in much weaker races than her stablemate and indeed the other foreign entrants in the race and she's yet to race at one of the major French XC courses.
