Another one of the stains on post war C20th history dies. I should say, although I half expected it, the ANC's capacity for forgiveness never fails to amaze me. PW Botha is to be given a State funeral :o Since all his principal supporters and advocates are now dead, I suppose it only leaves that mad mongoose Thatcher as the sole representative? Even she's going to be too ashamed to turn up though I'd have thought.

A thoroughly evil man with no sense of morality, and responsible for one of the most penicious regimes we've ever had had the dubious distinction of observing.

Never mind '10 to Follow' and an investment comp, howzabout a Pedants' Comp? Apostrophe abuse - 3 points. Incorrect capital letters - 1 point. Other punctuation mistakes - 2 points. Minor spelling errors - 5 points. Major spelling errors - 2 points on the warning bar, with a lifetime ban for anyone failing to spell obsequiousn.. obsqueien... obseq..

Pedant Alert !

"Crocodile"
I believe I've told you before that I suffer from minor dyslexias, and am only to pleased to take the odd rattle for it (at my own expense), pleased i've been able to add to your circus sense of enjoyment. Look forward to your next contribution, and I hope I continue to amuse you

Warbler, the very first post I made on this site had a spelling mistake, the welcome I received was how to spell the word correctly :(

Just a tad disappointed, I thought I'd explained it previously, (and at least had the good grace to apologise to Suny when picking him, unaware that Enlgish wasn't his first tounge when it was drawn to my atention). A Moderator has the opportunity to alter spelling and grammar if it so offends them. I could call it another alert, but instead would prefer to use the word disappointed. Hope Songsheet feels bigger now any way?

Warbler, it's all done a bit "tongue in cheek" on this forum. I have no excuses for my smelling, apart form it's not very good at times and I am occasionally corrected. Depending on who corrects it depends on whether I get annoyed or not. B) I also get the names of horses mixed up which Diminuendo especially finds hysterical. Luckily, I know her! :P Please don't take a fence. Songsheet is one of the good guys on here!

 Kathy! Thousands of years ago, when I worked for a very correct non-fiction publisher, one of the editors sent round a memo reminding everyone to represent the company properly in their typewritten correspondence, and not make smelling mistakes!

C'mon, Warbs - you ought to know us lot by now! We can be a bit rough on each other at times, but it's not done spitefully. Take a look at my efforts on here to get numbers right and have a good laugh! I don't know what the numeral equivalent of dyslexia is, but I'm sure I've got it. I just don't 'get' 'em!

No it wasn't you P, someone got there before you :P I didn't take offense at all, just thought it was odd. I have grown to view that person with the utmost respect and as one of the mainstays of this forum.

Like I said, just disappointed that she feels it necessary, and in doing so invites others to mock. One of the moderators alters my syntax not unregularly when they realise what I'm trying to say, and fair play to them, it's easier for all if they do. On other occasions I leave them little scope for interpretation. Most of it I can do myself, and even on third reading when the font changes and screen is bigger I sometimes spot them for the first time, and try and do them unilaterally.

Deliberately lazy English, factual inaccuracies, or points of order between two equally entrenched individuals I believe are different. A spelling, on an issue otherwise very close to myself, well.... so be it....?

Call in your so called "pedant police", whatever this nebulous self indulgent thing is? I suspect it translates into me, me, me, but I'd rather hide behind this artifical creation instead?

I was going to post up some poems from Distict Six on the issue of Botha, but its now lost some of the significance, and in any case, I'm not sure they'd survive the scrutiny

I don't think I command anyone's respect, and I'm just always ON the darn forum as I haven't got a social life, so I don't think it was me, Lee. On the other hand... :shy: I am not without guilt in that area, but not usually with new folks - they're a welcome commodity!

Warbler, sorry you feel wronged, and I'm not going to be an apologist for anyone on here, but I guess now you've made your point, people will know to back off.

Back to the topic - a vile man and I agree that the ANC's magnamimity reflects well on them and illustrates more than ever what a murderous butcher Botha was supported by his Cruella l Thatcher

As I said, I didn't take any offense and was trying to put it into perspective for Warbler.
If my memory serves me right, the word was Archaeological so that should narrow the field down a bit :)

Hmm, I can manage archaeological. I have no trouble with obsequiety (the spelling, not the act!) but I always baulk (or balk, if you're American) at obsequieousness - even now I'm not sure that's right. It just seems to go on too long. And that from someone who could spell 'specification' when they were five!

Well, I'm not going to pull anyone up again, ever, ever, ever, on points of speling, sin tax, grammer, punc'tuation or nuffink. Well, maybe just Brian, An Capall, Ardross, Songsheet, Shadow Leader, Kathy, PDJ...

Early 60's Lee, when he first became Prime Minister/President. He was a particularly brutal Defence Minister before that.

I was actually taken by a comment made by Bernard Ingham earlier this year in response to something David Cameron had said. Ingham let's not forget was widely believed to know Thatcher's mind and thinking and have been consistantly at one with her throughout her Premiership and afterwards.

Cameron issued a belated apology for the Conservative party's shameful support of Apartheid. It drew the following remark from Ingham;

"I sometimes wonder if David Cameron's a Conservative at all"

Thatcher, like Botha, never apologised. Ironic given that her son was using the country as his residence not so long ago, and de facto base from which to organise military coups in the continent. Oh the irony of lobbing him in Robben Island, though in fairness its a museum today rather than a prison.

Lee, the old swine has died aged 90, serving as President of S A from 1978 to 1989, so he was wasn't quite that ancient! The next year saw F W de Klerk come to power and ease South Africa into what it is today, although I was surprised that Mr Mandela considered that 'Pik' had also assisted with the transition. Maybe he felt assisting was a slightly better proposition than being called up to answer for crimes against humanity?

:o Piss takers I call them!! LEE-WARBLER They want better things to do with their lives, they still make the occasional TYPO themselves, maybe just maybe someone ought to highlight their faults also, the educated few!! I call them, anything to try and belittle..

What sort of kick do these people achieve by doing this??? Strange... really.....

It is actually a common thing on forums Merlin and is why I don't take offense.
I just wanted Warbler to feel that it shouldn't be taken seriously on here.
