I'm posting up my idea of the first four winners after looking this evening.
NEWCASTLE 2:15 CHIPCHASE STAKES
Markab (NAP) is no stranger to the racing game at the age of 9 and has won over 400 grand for connections so far in his career, but is in great form, having had two runs so far this season, and won his last listed race decisively at Windsor. Quite frankly, this horse is an owners dream, usually always runs a good race and will take a lot of beating here if he lines up. He was once second in a Kings Stand Stakes and I don't think many here can compete with that form.
2:45 MOBILE SPORTS HANDICAP
The one that catches the eye is Baby Strange who has some excellent form with a very decent sprinter called Secret Witness. I backed Secret Witness at York when he won (with Baby Strange in second) and he franked the Baby Strange form a few days later at the same track with another good sprinter called Judge And Jury.
Baby Stange is a hold up horse, and hence the last two runs aren't actually that bad given he dwelt in the stalls at Epsom and was hampered at Lingfield. A reproduction of his best form would see him win here, and incidently Secret Witness is entered at the Curragh on Saturday, and may be one to watch himself having had a short rest break which he so often runs well from since his last run. Baby Strange is entered in the 3:55 at Newcastle on the same day.
3:20 NORTHUMBERLAD PLATE
This looks extra tricky to me this year and 10/1 field is a reflection of my thoughts on who could win. Without the draw and ground I am in the dark but my feeling is Ermyn Lodge is the class horse in the race and probably the one to be on. The Sir Mark Prescott horse looks interesting and Donald McCains horse will be popular to pull off the Chester Cup / Northumberland Plate double. Ermyn Lodge is a bit better off in the weights by two pounds with I'll Have Another on their Cesrerewitch first and second when beaten a length and a half and that could make all the difference on testing going over 2 miles.
3:55 BONUS KING HANDICAP
Treadwell lost his way and perhaps even injured himself after winning the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Ascot two years ago, being hammered on his four subsequent starts in 2010 and 2011. However, as a result he has slipped down the handicap and may race here on the back of a useful run at Haydock last time, where he was giving weight to the three horses who finished ahead of him. Certainly good to see him back racing again, and as long as he could cope with possible testing conditions which he's never encountered before, you'd have to give him a chance. His sire Footstepsinthesand won on soft so I'd be prepared to take a chance on that.
