With the NH season approaching I decided to buy a laptop a month ago and included Norton anti virus as well as it was half price. The laptop came with 30 days 'security' and this weekend I shoved in the Norton CD I had purchased, only to find it needs a download because my laptop uses 'VISTA'.

I'm at my wits end trying to find this supposedly free download - can anyone tell me where to look.

Thanks in anticipation, MR2

Don't do it. For your own sanity don't do it. Norton is a PC killer. Quite possibly the worst piece of software ever written and far more deadly than any virus that it supposedly protects you from. It devastates system resources, recks usuability and once installed is near impossible to remove without severe system hacks (and you will need to remove it).

I am not kidding. Don't do it!

I second that, not that I know much about IT.
All my pc savvy mates recommend McAffee for extra security

McAfee are doing their best to emulate Norton, but frankly that would be a gargantuan feat.

As advised, forget it. For protcedting your pc, just download Sunbelt Kerio personal firewall, and AVG, both free. No hassles and will provide adequate cover.

I WOULD NOT HAVE NORTON'S FOR FREE..................

I had it once and never again........I did find a programme to eradicate it from my then operating system, but it took ages to work it out.................

Montyracing2, that is the problem. Vista doesn't appear to work or be compatible with so many other programmes. If it were me, I would remove Vista until they have resolved some of their problems. Probably not want you want to hear though. :brows:

It may already be running automatically - do you periodically get told that a new update is ready?

Anyway it is easy to check and is good practice to keep on to of Microsoft's updates.

Windows Update can be run from the start menu. I am not sure of its precise location in your structure, (mine is Start > All Programs >Windows Update in XP) but have a hunt around for it.

Alternatively go to http://www.update.microsoft.com/ and run a system check.

Thanks for that and just one more thing I'm contemplating ditching VISTA and downloading XP or 2000.

Is it easy to de-install Vista and would getting rid make good sense or am I throwing away a really good package?

Hope I'm not becoming a nuisance but I've never had to make such an effort when buying into a new laptop before.

Personally I wouldn't. Unless you have any particular devices that have drivers that don't run under Vista (i.e. an obscure film scanner) or you have any bespoke software that is not compatible with Vista. Then in my opinion it is not worth the retrograde step and certainly not worth the hassle.

A lot of scare stories in the press about business users deciding to stay with XP, but this is mainly due to the minimal benefits of upgrading versus the risk of doing so (across a whole platform). As an individual user, who already has it, I would stick with it (with the exception of the above two examples).

Sorry to bore everyone but having tried to download zone alarm my laptop has frozen itself from the internet - any ideas.

Thanks in anticipation.

My Vista computer came with a few Norton Products preinstalled (and McAfee SecurityCenter - talk about overkill).

In order to install AVG, I was forced to uninstall all of the above products and remove certain registry keys. Worse than a virus.

If I didn't do this, upon installing AVG I would be faced with a pc that will no longer boot and be forced to do a system restore.

Agree re AVG find it at grisoft.com

Free versions of anti virus, anti spyware and anti rookits available there.
Been using over the last couple of years. No problems.

Can no longer seem to find the free version of Kerio firewall, think kerio products were sold on and now pay for only..

I've downloaded the free AVG anti-virus, as I'm fairly sure I got a worm in today which I had to delete... was unable to get online for a couple of hours

However I keep getting a message that I need to choose an application to open avg75free_488a1138.exe

Do I need to open it? And if so which application do I need to choose?

I have a mac iBook G4, it's about 2/3 years old, ie doesn't not have the latest mac software
I use both Firefox and Safari to get online

Thanks for any help - I'm a complete big girl's blouse when it comes to IT

HS - why did you think you had a worm?
I suddenly found this 'application' in my finder window below the mac and the firefox icons, when searching for a reason why I couldn't get online although the wifi seemed to be working... when i clicked on it - I know, l probably shouldn't have, but I didn't 'open it' - some graphic with a witchy hat and goblins came up! I deleted it post-haste. Managed to get online via dial-up, then wifi again after about 7pm

Was probably a problem with the wifi all along [it's 'zoom'], but still that witchy thing came form somewhere and I didn't download it on purpose!

I've been getting in masses of spam lately too

Colin, your vulgarity is bottomless :brows:
