Norton - Vista Download

It did have a name, but I trashed it so fast I forgot to make a note of it!

If you click on 'finder' a panel comes up, and int he left top there is a vertical row of icons: mine come up:
Network
mac
firefox

and this icon was next int he list. I knew it shouldn't be there, but I clicked on it to see what it was, and this strange image came up, in a square frame. It looked more mischievous than evil... like some kid was having a joke. Well, it's gone now!

Thanks for the ulr re spam, I'll have a go at that

I never get any in my gmail account, which makes it even more annoying that ukonline can't police their service better

Yeah, I find GMail is brilliant for spam filtering. Some people actually forward all of their mail through a GMail account to make use of its filtering for free.

They do say that macs' own protection is enough
There is an acceptance that Macs are not the target of hackers in anything like the same way that Micro$oft are, but if Jobs falls of the very narrow path that he is treading and deemed to be profiterering from various incarnations of iDevices and starts upgrading OSs accross platform because he can (OSX on iPhone2?) then i doubt that will remain the status quo.

All the fanboys in the world can't protect you from that 13 year old kid with a chip on his shoulder.

OS X is already on the iPhone (and the iPod Touch).

I'm not sure what you're saying though - is it that the more ubiquitous OS X becomes, the more chances of it being targetted? That's absolutely true. Thankfully OS X is designed ground up from a far more fundamentally secure point of view than Windows ever was (before Vista, at least), so it's not just a case of it being targetted, it has to be targetted by people smart enough to figure out how to get past that.

I think it is a trimmed down version, with slim versions of apps. the next step is clearly to make it a truly mobile version of OSX. Which of cause will be a paid for upgrade. Windows ME anyone?

I also wouldn't bank on people not being smart enough. At least I wouldn't be so presumptious if I was Jobs.

Yeah, it's the core OS with any of the non-essential libraries that the iPhone and iPod touch don't need pulled out.

They won't offer a paid for upgrade for the software - they'll have you buy a new iPod/iPhone every couple of years if you want the latest and greatest. Profit margin is way bigger that way.

There's definitely people smart enough to write the viruses, it just makes it less likely.

Yeah sorry that is what I was getting at.

Having difficulty communicating at the mo as have been in work for 32 hours solid with the only breaks being for a couple of pints at lunchtime yesterday and today. Bad idea the second time... I'm goosed.

Thanks for all the help. After careful consideration of all inputs I restored my laptop operating system back to August and purchased a new Norton Vista package - said so on the box rather than 'update for Vista available'.

Internet re-engaged, Norton got loaded. Everything seems fine.

Having played with Vista it seems to me like a big change (from W2k, WXp) for little advantage. It does occur to me that Vista is more about microsoft protecting its business rather than in giving me a better service.

What seems to have happened to me was:

1) Chicken and egg - you need to be registered to get the patch but I needed the patch to get registered.... balmy

2) As I tried to download other options e.g.zonealarm, my network connection failed and left my laptop hanging unable to clear itself.

Anyway thanks to everyone and, recognising the level of inputs. I hope I haven't caused a mammoth loss of confidence in the use of this technology.

Good luck Monty, I might be the only person on here who likes Norton but I have never had a problem with it and never had a virus, I use XP
