I check my junkmail every other day for missed messages but today I saw a message with the title "Offline Whatsapp Voicemail".

Since I'm not on Whatsapp I've no idea why I'd be getting this message and I don't want to click on 'play' in case I open up a can of worms.

Does this kind of thing have a sinister story behind it?

Definitely don’t open it. I use WhatsApp a lot and have never received anything like that.

It may not necessarily be malicious, as such, but if it isn't then at best it'll be someone trying to advertise something or sell something. Just delete.

If it's an email...you can normally judge the intent by looking at who it's from (ie the sender's email address). If you see anything with RU in it on the one you got, then 99% it's malicious.

As a safety rule of thumb to all

Get into the habit of not opening any hyperlink in an email

I work in this type of environment and do see scams on the rise which look most authentic
