Old Expressions

'What did yer last slave die of?' (Shortened from '...? Exhaustion?') to someone who asks you to do something they could quite easily do themselves.

The very famous 'Ye'll have had yer tea?' attributed to the good people of Edinburgh, reputed to be extremely careful with their money, implying they weren't prepared to make you a cuppa if you visited.

'Ah've seen merr meat on a sparra's ankle' to someone very thin.

'If pigs could fly, she'd be a squadron leader' was going around the discos when I was in my youth, about an ugly girl.

'He/She musta been last in the queue when they were giein' oot looks' was another.

'She's got a face like a pun o' raw mince.' I'm not sure whether this applied just to ugliness or to spottiness.

Back to the slavery theme: 'Aye, tie a brush tae ma erse an' ah'll sweep the flerr as ah go!'
