Last week our Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern accepted a 14% pay rise. This means he is paid more than Gordon Brown and George Bush. And 6 times the Polish PMs salary. The amount of the raise was €38,000. His cabinet was also given a 12% raise, and our minister for Irish road signage now is paid almost as much as your PM.

Yesterday Mr. Ahern addressed a meeting in which the Trade Unions were involved. The theme of his talk was on the citical national importance for wage restraint.

The Taoiseach was asked to justify his pay rise in The Dail yesterday by the opposition. It is necessary apparently because Sarkozy never even has to put his hand in his pocket to buy a cup of tea.
