FLAT OUT, flat out with a chipped hindleg following his untidy sprawl on landing this weekend.

(Thought it might be tidier to keep all those now 'resting' for the season in one place?)

Story in RP yesterday :

Ollie Magern out for
season after leg surgery

BY PETER SCARGILL 8:32AM 26 FEB 2011

OLLIE MAGERN is out for the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery after fracturing his off-fore, while a decision on his racing future is to be delayed until the summer.

Trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies for Roger Nicholls, Ollie Magern has gained many racing fans with his bold, front-running displays, particularly in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby.

The 13-year-old not been seen on the racecourse since finishing fourth in the rearranged Totesport Peterborough Chase at Newbury in December.

A 13-time winner including two runnings of the Charlie Hall Chase and the Feltham Novices' Chase, Ollie Magern is now recuperating at Nicholls' farm.

"Ollie's been seen by the best vets in the country. He's been to Newmarket and had the leg pinned. He's been at Nigel's and he's back home with me now," Nicholls told the Gloucestershire Echo.

"He won't run again this season and he'll have the summer at home. He's been a fantastic horse and he's got a life to live after racing."

He's 13 and, given what he's rewarded connections with over the years, I don't think his racing career should be in any doubt. It should be over, so that he can recuperate from this trauma and indeed live a life after racing.

I know nothing of him on a personal level, but he's always looked like a sweet-natured and kind horse. (Someone will now tell me he gnashed them on a stable tour!) I'd like to think a person in the yard might like to have him f.o.c and let him parade occasionally.

Backspin, due to run at the Festival, died of a heart attack last night in his box at Jonjo's.

ALAN KING has been dealt a double blow before the jumps season begins in earnest with the news that two of the stables rising stars, Invictus and Batonnier, have been ruled out for the season.

"Invictus picked up an injury when being prepared for the RSA Chase at the last Cheltenham Festival, and, though he is making steady progress, he will be out for the whole of this jumps season, as will Batonnier."

Batonnier was also forced to miss the Cheltenham Festival after knocking a joint in the lead up to an intended run in the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle, and King added: "They are two of the stable's big guns so it is disappointing, but these are the hazards of NH racing, and the good thing is that both horses will still only be seven when they return."

Does anyone know if Ollie Magern has recovered and is having a nice retirement? I always start to think of him round Charlie Hall day.
