Pamplona Bull Run

It then fell again and arrived at the end of the course with one of its huge horns dangling, leaving it unfit to face a matador in the traditional evening fight.
Oh, I bet it was really sorry about that...

 Yes - where are the animal rights protesters when this is on? G'waaaann... get out there and wave those flags!

Has Spain yet stopped the cheerful rustic pastime of squashing a donkey to death by sitting the fattest man they can find on it?

Krizon, that was a very long time ago . Things have changed in Spain .

Our favourite pastime now is sitting the fattest donkey that we can find on top of the man .

Gracias, Luis! :) That's nice to know. So, now you get donkeys to sit on top of John McCririck? Not good enough - you need to put a bull on top of him, please! ;)

You must admit Luis, bullfighting is a pretty barbaric sport in this day and age.

I can appreciate to a certain extent the skill required by the matador. The bullring is a large place to stand in the middle of with a bull for company, but by the time the circus has finished with him, I doubt he can focus on the matador properly, or make a reasoned decision. A much more skillful exercise would be to do away with the pre-play and get down to business with a fully fit, strong bull and then see who is the stronger.

Sorry, but I always want to bull to do away with the man/lady with the sword, it just doesn't happen enough. The bull could be awarded the ears instead if the matador put up a good performance, not sure how they would get around the tail award for an exceptional fight. Suggestions on a postcard please.

It makes the art of fox hunting childs play by comparison.

I ran with the bulls in Pamplona about 5 yrs ago. Had no intention of doing it but didn't seem such a bad idea after a night on the beer in the town. The all night drinking makes Galway look tame. I thought I was so far up the course that the bulls wouldn't reach me, but they move like Repertory. Leaped over a fence as they were feet behind me.

I wouldn't do it again.

Last person killed there was an American student in 1995. I was in Spain at the time and I remember the front pages of the papers showing the moment the lad was gored. They don't hold back.

I simply can't understand why any dumb cluck after a few beers too many (sorry Homer!!) would want to risk their life doing this!

I had a cow calve yesterday afternoon and she's a fiery bitch. Normally, I'll go and check to see if the calf's OK and whether a bull or heifer but there ain't no way I was checking her calf, thanks very much! She's a dairy cow, not a beefer and they're usually very gentle, quiet creatures but this one wasn't having it, full stop!

On a sadder note, I read about a dairy farmer crushed by the bull he had running with his dairy herd yesterday. He didn't survive and after that, nor did the bull.... Didn't say whether it was a dairy bull or not (I rather suspect it was) but we've three beef bulls on the two farms at the moment and great care has to be taken about not letting them get anywhere near one another. They can be very unpredictable.

Don't know if any of you (other than Homer, obviously!!) have ever heard what a very pissed off bull sounds like but it is frightening... My neighbour has a very beautiful herd of Ruby Red Devon cattle and they are currently in the next field to mine behnd the house - where I currently have the about to calve cows. One of said cows duly started to give birth (naturally at 2.30am - when else?) on Monday night and for some reason wasn't holding back on blaring her head off. It was a particularly still night and it really revved up the Devon bull next door - he started to 'growl' - honest! They really do rumble and growl and it's a very, very eery sound. I was just thankful for a thick hedge and electric fencing between me, my cows and him!!!

We are males. We do far worse than that after beer.

I dont like the bull run in the streets of Pamplona, I have been there twice and the party is quite good.

About Bull fighting
I like it quite a lot, I go in Madrid and it is a good joy.

On one of the tracks just down from the yard, one on which we ride on, is a farm that specialises in breeding fighting bulls. The area of Andalucía where the yard is situated is prime bull-fighting country & a lot of the fighting bulls are bred here. It's a really strange feeling riding past as the paddocks they let them out in are surrounded by what looks like metal sheeting - every time we ride past ready to hold on in case one has manged to break out! To be fair, the horses are always very much on edge & ready to flee every time we go past it - they must be able to smell, or hear somthing that frightens them from there.

That's about the size of it. :shy:

Hardly the same - there isn't a guy with a red cloth trying to stab them as they jump the Chair !

Do you think the horses enjoy when running in the Grand National?

Not the biggest fan of the race but certainly plenty of them love it (can't be said for the bulls loving bull fighting though). As we see horses who don't like it simply refuse when they have had enough.

Bullfighting is unspeakable it's whole raison d etre is seeing animals tormented and killed.

Oh shit, I feel the need for some accuracy here.

Bull do enjoy fighting - believe me.

However, I do not approve, support or condone bull fighting - either performed intentionally and certainly not accidentaly when two get loose on the farm together!!!

Each other, perhaps but men on horses wth little sharp spears and then a guy with a big sword that he intends to deposit between your ribs prior to cutting your ears off to give to some VIP or other? I don't think so!
