I simply can't understand why any dumb cluck after a few beers too many (sorry Homer!!) would want to risk their life doing this!
I had a cow calve yesterday afternoon and she's a fiery bitch. Normally, I'll go and check to see if the calf's OK and whether a bull or heifer but there ain't no way I was checking her calf, thanks very much! She's a dairy cow, not a beefer and they're usually very gentle, quiet creatures but this one wasn't having it, full stop!
On a sadder note, I read about a dairy farmer crushed by the bull he had running with his dairy herd yesterday. He didn't survive and after that, nor did the bull.... Didn't say whether it was a dairy bull or not (I rather suspect it was) but we've three beef bulls on the two farms at the moment and great care has to be taken about not letting them get anywhere near one another. They can be very unpredictable.
Don't know if any of you (other than Homer, obviously!!) have ever heard what a very pissed off bull sounds like but it is frightening... My neighbour has a very beautiful herd of Ruby Red Devon cattle and they are currently in the next field to mine behnd the house - where I currently have the about to calve cows. One of said cows duly started to give birth (naturally at 2.30am - when else?) on Monday night and for some reason wasn't holding back on blaring her head off. It was a particularly still night and it really revved up the Devon bull next door - he started to 'growl' - honest! They really do rumble and growl and it's a very, very eery sound. I was just thankful for a thick hedge and electric fencing between me, my cows and him!!!
