Panda Cam

The polar bears are being really playful right now. I'm not sure what it is, it looks like a shredded tyre, but something is getting seven bells knocked out of it. They've been plunging in and out of their pool in a sunny San Diego. People are swimming off Del Mar beach - lucky buggers!

 Looks great. I may treat myself to a visit before it's curtain time. Panda has Mummy in attendance at the mo... this is addictive stuff.

I'm still looking in every day. Dawn's rosy fingers are beginning to crack the bowl of night over San Diego (we are eight hours ahead of SD) and Mummy panda is aslump in the den. Well, she IS most of the den - can't see baby Su Lin, she must be on the nipple.

The polar bears are going to be treated to a 'Snow Day' today, and are expected to cavort on it for the public's delight (see Polar Cam). What's the betting they just light up a couple of festive cigars, swill their brandy balloons, and say 'you like the stuff - you bloody play in it, then'?

I plagiarized shamelessly from the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, I'm afraid, Colin: "For morning, in the bowl of night..." etc. Beautiful stuff, though he wasn't quite so hot on comedy.

From Pandas to Rhinos.....................
my local zoo has had some bad times of late. You may remember reading on here how they lost a family of giraffes in a fire. Recently a tiger cub died. It was one of two born, the other cub is doing well.
Hopefully good times are around the corner as their female Black Rhino is very close to giving birth.

The story is below which also has a web cam.
Rhino story

Sita has had her baby, weighing in at 40lbs. Check out the above link to see this rare baby with mother. Well done Paignton Zoo!!!

There was a brief shot of the wee baby on tonight's national news, Dims. Let's hope Paignton manages to hang onto this wean - they seem to have been very careless about losing their animals!

"A Mum said to her kids, "The day's fine, so
Let's go and see Paignton's new baby rhino;
It's tiny and cute,
A real little beaut,
And much nicer than any kids I know."

Krizon I think careless is a bit strong. The giraffes were lost to an electrical fault. I would say that was the fault of the electicians. They lost a tiger cub twin recently, but that had a bad heart. That can't be blamed on the zoo.
Every year they have dozens and dozens of new borns. This is extra special.

Thanks Dims, I have never been to this zoo, but will check it out soon.

I visit London Zoo and am a member, they also have an excellent website - and a video section where you can watch some of the animals. If anyone is interested this is the page -

I love the wild dogs, and also the anteater who is a truly weird looking beastie!

They recently hatched 4 komodo dragons, but sadly no cam on them.

It is nice that most zoos nowadays are into conservation rather than just caged exhibitions.
