Pig Gate

I have a dirty suspicion that this is going to end up being worse than is currently being publicised, something just doesn't feel right about it. Why is it taking 3 days discussion, or any discussion, to figure out that everything needs to be culled that was given the dodgy feed and production can continue with stock that wasn't given the feed. Maybe I'm completely wrong but I've ordered a British ham from M&S for Christmas just in case.

You could be right. I contacted Olhausen myself who do Kearns sausages amongst others...yum yum...I digress...anyway they reckoned it was a complete over reaction. Experts are saying you'd have to be eating the stuff for years. Others are not so sure...I get the feeling someone somewhere is keeping something to themselves regarding this issue, possibly Mr Rogan.

Compensation seems to be the main issue in the delay. Surely it's a no brainer that everyone in the chain has to be compensated when the problem is caused by a government licensed and regulated outfit.

I suppose they're trying to isolate exactly where the affected animals are to decide which little piggies can go to market.....sorry , couldn't resist.

It looks like a whole pile of beef is going to have to be recalled as well plus thousands of cattle killed. Plus they still have to inspect other (pig) feed producing facilities to check whether they are using the dodgy oil - since the meat is not fully traceable, I wonder can they put hand-on-heart and swear every piece of meat that tested positive for dioxines can be put down to that one facility. Not being in any way ruralised, could turkeys and chickens not eat the same sort of slop as pigs?

Worst case scenario, this could do for Irish food production what the anti-freeze malarchy did for Austrian wine production.

Already not so bleak. The beef test results are back in and although positive for PCBs they are only two to three times the permitted level, as opposed to 80 to 200 times with the piggies. Apparently they are completely safe and there is no need to recall products, although animals over the limit will be destroyed.

Which begs the question - why set a limit in the first place where you are completely safe eating products three times over that limit?

I heard an 'expert' saying that they decide on a limit and than multiply it by 10 to be sure to be sure ! You seem to have the inside line on this stuff.

It's more to do with where people sourced their feed than to do with scale, Aldaniti, although the tiny producer feeding kitchen scraps directly to their porky would not have been affected. Those who were unlucky enough to have bought their feed from one particular food recycling plant are now screwed.

The plant in question took in stale bread, crisps and other waste food and converted it into pig feed. As I understand it, this involved heating up the lovely mix of ingredients using an oil-burning heater of some kind. When somebody at the plant got the bright idea of using a different oil, presumably cheaper, they ended up infusing the entire production lot with PCBs.

I don't understand how it hasn't been possible to narrow this down to the feed plant's customers, and the downstream processors and products directly concerned. By asking people to throw out all the pigmeat produced in Ireland since September just creates a bigger scare than is justified.

Either that or Melendez is correct, we haven't yey heard the full story.

By the way, Sheikh, did you ask Olhausens if they reckoned any of their product is contaminated? I happen to have a (frozen) stash of their sausages from my last trip to Dublin.

Unfortunately for you and us, yes. Every Sausage in the country is affected and it is unlikely to be resolved until the weekend. The actions were totally over the top but there you go.

I don't think the above really answers your question but I reckon if you eat them after midnight under a full moon, say three Hail Marys and beat the cat with the brush you'll be ok.

Aldaniti
I'll give you a fiver for one rasher :<3:

Rory;

I'm not sure what's going to kill me, but it certainly won't be streaky.

Given your contribution on the 4th Mod thread I can make a reasonably good guess at what is going to kill you. My bet is that she will reverse a caravan over your noggin.

You would not believe how easy it is to make your own bacon!
Pork Belly
Sea Salt & Brown Sugar mix
no nasty nitrates & additives! could never go back to shop bought stuff!

Sadly no! I have a friend who lives on a small farm on Exmoor, she breeds Berkshires, they have the run of 25acres of pasture & hazelnut woods from the time they are weaned to slaughter age (8/9mths) not 4 mths as mass farmed type, they are then hung for 10days, the flavour is incredible!

Sounds great, have you considered a cottage industry or does your friend have one ?

update

The Co Carlow food recycling plant at the centre of the pork contamination crisis has issued a statement saying it only ever purchased oil from a legitimate supplier in the Republic of Ireland.

The statement follows reports that gardaí are investigating a company in Co Tyrone as the possible source of waste oil that caused the dioxin contamination scare over the weekend.

Millstream Recycling says it will not be making any further comment at this stage due to the fact that the gardaí and Environmental Protection Agency are continuing their investigations.

I don't know anywhere around here that does their own rasher and sausies. I certainly wouldn't mind paying a little extra for it .
