Plans to Restrict Betting Shops

Thats what I loved when visiting Edinburgh, didn't seem to be a bookies in sight. it was refreshing.

It seems to me the line of thought that prevailed in allowing as many bookies to open as possible was the same thinking that wanted to see super casino's in every city.

No one could challenge it in the good years when people supposably had loads of money to fritter away (not really a true estimation in itself) during the boom, but now seems like a bit of a shambolic idea given the desperation many familes are in.

I'm all for creating jobs but I don't like the notion that bookies are totally harmless and therefore the vested interest should run riot over local government/councils.

About the first smart thing Harriet Harman has done in her political career this one.

I've nothing against bookies shops, but I have a strong dislike of one armed bandits/pokeys, and I hope they continue to be banned in betting shops in Ireland.

They are highly addictive for a lot of people, so much so that they account for about half the revenue in most UK betting shops where they are installed.

In the 1980s Dublin city centre used to be dominated by amusement arcades where these machines were the main attraction. The machines were eventually banned after a citizens' campaign fought an uphill, but successful, battle to get rid of them - the two main political parties were being funded by the arcade owners, and it subsequently emerged that the assistant city manager was also on the take. Once the gambling machines were banned 90% of the arcades closed.

Remove the machines from UK betting shops and their number will quickly reduce in the poorer districts.

You just knew that Harriet Harperson would be involved

Restricting numbers is stupid. What will happen? More people in existing ones thats all

Just the usual busybody leftie weknowwhatsbestforyou rubbish

Having said that, I dislike the machines. and wouldnt be against a ban

At the moment we have a situation where bookmakers are ramming shops down every feckers throat, it is currently the bookmakers who are saying weknowwhatsbestforyou to the joe public Clivex! And we know what that would be don't we?!

Someone or something needs to balance things up a little.

Turning Hackney into a mini Monte Carlo is a sign of the times.:)

No its not the bookmakers. Its called choice. No one has to play the machines. I never have and never will.

I know this is pretty irrelevant but is this the same Harriet Harmann who postured over a recycling culture whereby now I have to ponder for ten minutes about into which bin I have to put each type of plastic - oh, don't get me on carrier bags!

Actually this is just the usual clivexarguingbyformulae rubbish.

The proposal to put betting shops into a separate use class comes from the report by the Conservative Mary "Queen of Shops"Portas, commissioned by a Conservative government.

Stupid comment as ever. Of course it fits in with the pattern of thicko harmans humourless authoritarian streak. she was bound to jump on this issue in much the same way she she jumps on anything thing that is about rules and obedience to the nanny state

She should do herself and all of us a favour and jump on something more worthwhile and fcking realx a bit

I would suggest grasshopper.. even if it would make for a vile video

And So what? Its Harman whos being going on and on about it. i couldnt care less what portas thinks and just because its from a report commissioned by the conservatives doesnt mean they will take it up does it?

This stuff is just plain boring. Trying to have a discussion with you is like talking to the disembodied voice in the lift, you keep producing the same set pieces of abuse and unoriginal thinking.

It is not stupid of me to point out where the proposal originated, and your equation of free choice with the Conservatives and nanny state with the left is too simplistic to be useful. Who got rid of censorship and took the state out of the bedroom? Who relaxed the laws on gambling?

If you have problems with "abuse" then try not kicking it off?

Where did i say that the tories would be any more relaxed than labour? Usual habit of putting words in mouth when struggling (again)

I was pointing out Harmans usual left wing nannying streak (is this so difficult to understand?) which everyone is aware of. It is of course a feature of many on the left that "the state knows best"

She does not represent every section of her party and numerous proposals she has made have been spiked (thank god) but if you are unaware of her patronising bureaucratic streak, which is shared with many from her wing, then you simply havent been following matters

I'm not interested in discussion as a contest. The only thing I'm struggling with is my patience. You've already banged on about Harriet Harman a hundred times. Repetition bores. Try saying something interesting, constructive even.

Are you not advocating at the moment that "the state knows best", or should I say that "the establishment" (bless their little string vests) knows best?

Err.sort of point taken but.well i think as you know, its not quite the same thing

My borough (Richmond) is the polar opposite of Southwark, socially and economically (although its really taking off around london Bridge and Bermondsey) and i would doubt there are more than 20 (usually empty) shops in the borough. 77 is extraordinariliy high

Im all for free markets and trading but there is an unease about this i will admit

A good friend of mine is internationally known in his profession but when he was younger he had awful problems with poker machines.
I have to say I find the new generation of machines repulsive-they disgust me.The only people interested in their introduction to Ireland are the paid cheerleaders of the major bookmakers. It will be a sad day for the country if they are legalized.

Well well:

Gambling machines boost Ladbrokes profits

By Racing Post staff 8:12AM 16 FEB 2012
LADBROKES on Thursday announced a 19.2 per cent boost from gambling machines, which triggered a £193.5 million full year operating profit for the company.

The firm reported an operating profit fall of 4.3per cent (from £202.3 million in 2010), but the numbers beat City expectations. The average forecast had been £187 million, according to a Thomson Reuters poll of 15 analysts. Revenue, which, like profits excludes high rollers, grew by 0.4 per cent at £980.3 million.

Gross win, total bets minus payouts, from machines rose by 19.2 per cent to £360.9 million.

Chief executive Richard Glynn said: "The contribution frommachines has been excellent and we have grown profit per shop for a second consecutive year despite a comparatively poor gross win margin in the second half of 2011 and continued cost pressures."

Ladbrokes blamed unfavourable sporting results, particularly in the fouth quater on their sportsbook margin which was almost two percentage points lower than in the same period of 2010.

Net debt was reduced by £38.1 millionand the company increased its dividend per share - final dividend of 3.90 pence up 4.0 per cent ( full year of 7.80 pence, up 2.6 per cent).

I loved the slots and video blackjack/poker in Vegas. But deep down I'm glad they're in Vegas. (plus: 'free' booze!).
