If only I could have had a bet on it....The RP will probably spend the entire week bigging up an Ombudsman v Delacroix rematch as if they're Mill Reef and Brigadier Gerard.
Old news, it's always tomorrow that counts in the newspaper game....No mention of what was on the front page today!![]()
I'm sensing £5.20p (or the Euro equivalent) saved both sides of the Irish Sea tomorrow morning.Melbourne Cup Pricewise. A lot that c*** would know about Australian form.
Cheers. Kalpana must be opposed I agree. Estrange wasn't that far behind Minnie Hawk on good to firm at York.Just think Estrange is much better on soft and Kalpana keeps disappointing.
Back in the 80s, when I first got involved in all that malarkey, the school of thinking was that mentioning a horse's name repeatedly would grate on the reader so use euphemisms that convey extra info instead. He used the phrase 'the son of Roaring Line'. If you want to spot a fraud in racing, look for this kind of filler to pad the word count.
I see they've changed the running order - the Long Distance Cup now retains its position as the opening race and the 128 large non-Pattern 2yo contest with Group 1 conditions is second in.Luckily we have the 2yr old race first to get an angle on the ground conditions

So Shergar would become the son of Great Nephew in the second sentence, Michael Stoute's charge in the third, the colt in the fourth and the 3yo in the fifth, then maybe Shergar again in the sixth in case the bewildered reader had by then lost the trick of who they were on about.
Ex Timeform Graham Dench, one of the more genuinely knowledgeable of the Racing Post's original staff imo, reckoned that was all dated cliched nonsense and insisted on calling a horse by its actual name.
I thought you'd enjoy reading all that, so no need to thank me.
Dench was alright imo - and he never wore a tie I resented, in fact I can't remember ever seeing him in a tie at all.
Balmoral Betting: https://www.oddschecker.com/horse-racing/2025-10-18-ascot/16:40/winnerFinal declarations made, as this is Slim's (sponsor's name-riddled) thread I am assuming all discussion about trying to gauge any draw advantage on the Ascot straight course is verboten, Arisaig runs, the excitement mounts!
I'm new to betting and maths, but I'd be fairly sure the 40/1 I put her up at would be better than 8/1?Arisaig is well drawn in 4 and is as low as 8s.
Every chance of getting in the six if it properly gets the mile imo.Bobby Bennu in the Balmoral for Roger Varian at 33/1.
I can't have the old boy Bopedro out of the frame.Bopedro 60s
Arisaig 40s.
