Don't do anything unpaid for anyone else ever because they won't do anything unpaid for you.

To a point I'm in agreement even though I'm in the fortunate position to report that the only work I now do is voluntary work. Of course, I'm doing this voluntary work (in all its guises) primarily for me.

Certainly not. From my end I've never thought that we didn't get along.
Cracking - it starts and ends there for me.

I could get into all the political stuff about how many lefties ironically won't help anyone or give to charity because they think there should be a State providing proper welfare by taxing the bollocks off those they perceive to be wealthy, whereas those on the right consider a bit of voluntary help here and there or the odd donation to charity a small price to pay for having the State leave them and their assets alone, but tbh it's pointless, no one ever changes anyone's mind and it just leads to pointless conflict.

Suffice to say that we all view the world through our own personal prisms and we all have our own ideas about what being a "good" or "bad" person is and whether we even aspire to having one of their labels.

I love the honesty here.

I've met various "volunteers" over the years - some wear it as a badge of sainthood - but the reality is I never met a volunteer who wasn't doing it because they got something out of it on a personal level, whther it was free admission to a football match, a race meeting, the event they were "volunteering" for funded some activity or other they participated in, or simply a positive feeling about it.

No one does anything for literally nothing.

And that's fair enough tbh.

I don't even mind if "volunteers" think they're better people than me because I never volunteer for anything and never will.

They probably are.

I hope that none of the persons decrying those people who help others for no reward ever need first aid for a medical condition or accident in the street 🤷🏻‍♂️

Certainly not. From my end I've never thought that we didn't get along. We have different views on some things but id struggle to meet anyone ive ever agreed with on everything. I enjoy reading your pieces I get your sense of humour and the thing I like on here is there are people who are much more articulate and better with words than myself. You, Slim, Jinny, Colm and various others all different styles but all wonderfully articulate and well educated.

Tbh most horse racing forums are dying a death but this one seems to have been reinvigorated. It's good to see. Along side that I've seen a lot of smoke and mirrors punters who claim to be good and to make money and I know they are full of shit im fairly good at spotting the difference. This place now has at least half a dozen punters who i know really know their stuff and are the real deal where it comes to making money from horse racing. Thats a rare thing and hope it lasts for a good while yet.
Nice post. I've always felt the point of this forum was to enjoy racing and try to back a winner together.

I'm someone who has always helped others from a pretty young age when I was shamed into not sharing some sweets as a child. And it stuck. I don't do it because I want recognition, rather I volunteer because certain things need taking on or saving by someone competent. And I have discovered in my middle age that I am unbelievably competent at a huge range of things.

I started raising funds for my local hunt (btw I really don't give a stuff if you do or don't support it - it's part of my lifestyle and upbringing) and over the years raised about £40k in fundraising - three hunt balls, 4 Christmas lunches, 4 point to point meetings, 2 Cheltenham Festival previews, a dog show, several calendars, Country Fair refreshment tents, plus a Pantomime. I then moved to Area Secretary for Wessex Area Point to Point where I look after 21 fixtures in the area as well as standing at National level to decide on policy. Plus I run various meetings as well as the Area Awards evening (last 6 years) which is a black tie event for about 120 (all single handed).

I am also Chairman of our local flower show (www.wiveyshow.co.uk) after I went to the AGM and nobody would take it on. I have turned it round from making a profit of £500 to £7k last year. And its still growing with all the profits going back into the community. This year it is the 109th year! It is hugely important to keep such events going and nobody else was willing to stand up and be chairman.

So why do I do this? Well because I am good at it. I don't get paid for any of it but I am full of ideas and can see how things can be improved in all events I get involved in. I don't need recognition or a pat on the back - I just do it. Some days when my brain is flying at a million percent per hour, I do query why but I do get things done and combine it with running a small business which is also flying at the moment.

I will help anyone that needs it too. A guy last year struggling to carry his suitcases from the bus to the taxi rank, a girl standing at the side of the road crying because she was late to a funeral and couldn't find the crematorium so I gave her a lift. Complete strangers but in need of help. I have been in positions in my life whereby I have been nearly as low as you can get and borderline homeless with no money and no food. It is amazing how few genuine people there are out there who will help.

Even when everything in your life is going badly, if you can do someone a favour, you should. You'll get a reputation as someone who gets things done.

Jinnyj you also have the nouse to ignore could not give a toss people who have attacked you personally from behind their keyboard almost to the point of being libellous in something they have no interest in but think that they could do a better job for which you are to be applauded 👏👏👏.
You also helped me out on a long trip to Taunton by offering me dinner/bed and breakfast in your very comfortable Airbnb a couple of years ago even standing out in the rain because I could not find your house 🙈.
You truly do go above and beyond to help people that you have never met and to those that dis you……..meet the lady in person and then dis her and I will call you a liar !!!

Yes Slim rather than earn the reputation of being a person who is always moaning and putting people or organisations down because of the position or if they were educated privately and actually doing sod all.

Im not sure how that relates to what I said to be honest.

I'd say my upbringing was tough for various reasons but fortunately find my life in a good place and do try and help others if I see that I can in some small way whether just a wee nugget of advice or in a practical way if I'm able to. I do both proper fives and a sort of jogging football with older guys and some disabled ones and love it when I can set them up to score when I see the joy on their faces. If you saw what some of these guys have to deal with it makes you thankful for what you take for granted.
By God your right that there is so many selfish narcissistic folk around but I still meet loads of decent people who, like me,are happy to see others do well and thrive especially if I can in some small way help them.
A little kindness can still go a long way I find and while I'm hard nosed enough not to give a toss what most folk think of me I am happy to help in most situations. You are so correct in how tough life can be so if you can ease someone's burden then surely its the decent thing to do. Yes folk can take advantage of you but when you get to my old fart stage of life you can usually spot a wrong un. Its hard enough for most folk to reach out for help,so if you are asked for help I find I will try my utmost to do so.
Like you I get caught up in folks issues as I am an outgoing person and while some folk might take the attitude that why should I help I do try and that's the way I was brought up. Be resilient, hard working but always be aware that there are many, many more folk than me having much tougher lives.
Lastly I totally agree that you should never look for reward for helping others. Knowing you might have helped someone in some small way is enough reward for me.
As Robert burns said we can't all perceive how others see us but I'd like to think that a few folk might see me as a decent guy who isn't interested in screwing anyone over and is approachable and helpful.
