I think Brian may have hit the nail on the head. Even when religion is the apparent motivator, greed for money/power etc if the real motivating force.

religon is not the cause of war
it is the excuse for war
its greedy people either hungry for power and/or wealth misusing religon for their own ends
or in many instences people using religon to divert the problems their misuse of power has caused onto others
many people find it easier to blame others for their misfortunes rather than look closer to home
