A few photos of Cartmel.

Barney surveying the scenery.

A strange sign near one of the fences at Cartmel racecourse. By the way, shouldn't it say affect, rather than effect?

Looking down the course on the way for a walk through the woods, which were full of bluebells!

It should indeed say 'affect', although a bursting gas canister near the start would most likely 'effect' racing pretty darn sharpish! It should also be 'the racecourse retainS' as it's a collective noun, yatter-yatter - how many times must we correct such ungrammatical slop? I think an e-mail from Barney to the course is called for, Kathy.

I am thrilled to have reached my £500 sponsorship target already, so have upped the target to £600 now.

The more money I can donate, the faster I intend to run! :D

I'm half jogging and half power walking 4.5 miles a day and have been for the last 6 weeks. Barney has never been fitter! :) It takes me about 1hr on average so going in the right direction.

I have a nice talking pedometer to tell me how many calories I am burning, how many steps I have taken etc so depending on how many calories I burn depends on how many biscuits I can have when I get back home! :D

By the way, as boring as this is for many of you, I reached my latest target of £600 today so have upped the bar to £700.

As you may know, Ted from Final Furlong Racing won the prize in the recent Royal Ascot competition last week, which was a cheque or some WH Smiths gift vouchers. Despite having many personal issues at home at the moment, Ted has asked me to donate his prize to my Race for Life charity fund.

I really appreciate it and am off to donate the money online now. I really hope to see you, Ted and hopefully one of your daughters at Dorney in a couple of weeks time. Thanks again!

Fine, Helen.

I am now far fitter than I have been for a few years and actually get withdrawal symptons if I don't get out for a walk/jog twice a day. How sad is that?

We went to a caravan park down near Worthing at the weekend, and I even got up and jogged around the park (with Barney) much to the amusement of many of the other caravanners! :)

Ardross, they send you lots of information all the time and even have their own forum so you can discuss your progress with others. I thought it was a bit overkill for 5kms to be honest. If I ever did a full marathon then I would definitely follow a training plan.

My training plan

Last night I went out for my evening jog at about 8pm, with my phone and dog attached to his lead in one hand, and a Kit Kat in the other.

Yes, in fairness to Jade, she (evidently) managed about 16 miles in the London Marathon this year and confessed before the start of the race that she had done very little exercise and had been on a diet of curry.

The only curry I eat at the moment, is a bit of curry powder in my coronation chicken on my baked potato... followed swiftly by a (dark chocolate) Kit Kit! B)

I am now in training for this years attempt! I am (hopefully) alot fitter than last year, although I now weigh more? (must be all that extra muscle :D ) so I hope to get a round a lot faster this year!

Anyone else fancy giving it a go?

I took my daughters to the one in Windsor last year and it took me about an hour to drive the last mile to the course.

If they want to go there again they can bloody well make their own way there. :D

Kathy, best of luck with the run.
I have been running since 2000, albeit slowly. Sounds like you've got the bug!
One of my proudest moments, was when I did the RFL last year round Epsom Downs, in memory of my Nan who was brought up in the area and had died at the turn of the year, requesting that donations be made to Breast Cancer Campaign. I had "Running for my Nan" written all over the back of my t-shirt. How to make 10 members of your family cry at once. Was the same on Sunday, first race run in memory of my Grandad, who died 4 weeks ago. Again with the memo on the back of the tshirt. Anyway, I digress.
I can't really help with any training plans at all, I do what is good for me and wouldn't like to pass advice on that front on in case it's not suitable for others. But if you need any other info/help, don't hesitate to ask. Amazing how many niggling and silly sounding questions there can be, that actually are very sensible.
You'll be doing a marathon next!!
Check this out for a bit of inspiration (and I don't mean to sound big headed in this at all)
My Running Website
Best of luck and let us know how it goes.

Nice site, sue, and good to see you! I wish I'd known about your Plumpton gallop - I could've come out to bawl my support. Let me know if you do it again, and I'll come and see you. :)

Great website, Sue! My God, I'm thinking I am doing doing one small run, and you have completed a full marathon. :shy:

I'll think about half marathons next year! :D

After four weeks off with the worst cough I've ever had (my doctor accused me of being a covert smoker, the b@stard! Never smoked in my life!!), I am now back on the gym treadmill - literally. As I had just got back into the swing before the layoff, it was doubly annoying to stop.

So I am doing two weeks fairly intensive cardio before starting weights and I actually hope to weigh more, Kathy, cos hopefully it's muscle, not lard! I have never given a toss what I weigh - it's how I look and whether me jeans fits! And as I have gone back to my 'fat' pairs, it's back on the diet and also up the exercise. I'd love to do the running but I am a bit paranoid about me knees!! Think I'll have to do a lot more fitness training before I risk them!

All of which means my mare isn't getting ridden enough, cos there ain't enuf hours in my day right now, what with a company in nuclear meltdown due to radical disagreement between us Directors, a mare about to foal, the usual farm chores yada yada yada.... zzzz

They tell me it's tough at the top but it's fecking tougher halfway up....

I did 76 steps on the cross-trainer today before collapsing... :shy: Guess what might be your birthday prez this year, Jools?
