Rachel Alexandra in danger after foaling

Stonestreet Farm have released this which may turn out to be the only opportunity they have, but let's hope not

She nearly died after last years foaling too - perhaps if she pulls through they will call it a day.

Fingers crossed.

It's not flushing she needs, she has some internal bleeding/bruising that they're worried might become hemorrhage and is colicky.

It was tongue-in-cheek, Miesque! The mare has had two pretty big foals, no? So obviously she does have issues. By 'flushing' I don't mean wash out....I mean flush as in super ovulate. Yes, I do know it isn't 'legal', in the same way AI isn't but, unless the industry has changed dramatically over the half dozen years, that certainly happens with problem mares! Obviously, this mare is so high-profile it wouldn't be possible to flush and use recips but a pity all the same, as foaling seems to present quite a risk to the mare and it would be a shame to lose her genetics and a huge shame to possibly lose the mare herself.

She's worth so much as a brood mare I can't see them not breeding from her in the future if it's at all possible, but would it be after such a major operation? I'm not liking what I've read on the update. I hope so much that she gets through this. What a lovely photo of her. C'mon Rachel, you can win this one. Please.

From the RP:

USA: Rachel Alexandra makes steady progress
One week after her emergency surgery following the birth of a filly foal, Rachel Alexandra continues to make steady progress. According to vet Dr Brett Woodie, the mare's appetite is improving along with her gastro-intestinal functions. (10 hours ago)

How bad was it last year ? As I said, she does seem to have biggish foals... Surely at least they'll give her this year off and then rethink... Bet they're regretting being so high profile now - if they were more along the lines of, say Juddmonte, they might have been considering going down the flushing route.... Really can't see why that isn't permitted - mares rarely flush more than one, maybe two embryos per flush and, if industry regulated it to one registered progeny per problem mare every 24 months for a max period, of, say twelve years, then that would close doors to folk trying to abuse the system as there wouldn't be any point trying to multiple flush as tight limit on progeny registrations. Safer for RA too...
