Hi all,

Sorry if you have already seen this post on other forums.

I am a Sports Management student at the University of Worcester who is currently undertaking my final year research project into spectator attendance at National Hunt horse racing fixtures. I would really appreciate it if you could take the time to complete my research survey, which can be found at the following link;

https://goo.gl/forms/H0vz9UcoJJVEJqD72

This study hopes to further tailor the National Hunt horse racing experience to suit the attendance motivations of spectators, and increase attendance numbers and revenue at National Hunt Racecourses throughout Britain.

Thank you for your time,

Emma

I started completing this survey but I'm afraid I gave up before completing page 1. Being asked to rate 23 reasons for attending NH racing when around half the reasons are duplicates of others in the list, and "to get away from life's problems" is essentially repeated three times in very slightly different wording, does not make for an engaging or meaningful survey likely to help achieve your stated aims. Do you get feedback from your tutor or supervisor on the structure of your survey before making it 'live'?

Thank you for taking the time to look at the survey. I’m sorry you felt this way, and yes my work is viewed by a tutor, and processed through an ethics review board before it is allowed to be sent out. This survey is actually an adaptation of the Sports Fan Motivation Scale which was developed by Daniel Wann in 1995. This means that although I have changed the wording to suit the sport of horse racing, the questions are those of a highly regarded academic researcher. The questions within the survey are grouped and relate to each of the eight common motives of sports fan attendance, this is why they may seem repetitive. This survey has been validated and was found to be reliable and internally consistent, it has also been used throughout the past 20 years to support many research articles into fan motivation. It is because of these reasons that I chose to use this particular survey within my study, and I do believe this tried and tested data collection tool will help me achieve my stated aims.

Thank you again,

Emma

Completed - there was a bit of replication in the questions. It reads as a bias towards determining a pre-judgment from the author possibly?

Have completed the survey. From the link DG posted however it appears the Wann survey is squarely aimed at team sports (where a fan is dedicated to a certain team). Despite the attempts to create this type of scenario in the KS/Denman era, racing isn't really a team sport and racegoers don't really 'support' anyone. For this reason many of the questions are largely irrelevant and I therefore don't believe you will get a viable result.

Thank you all for your comments. The survey has been used in the past for research into individual sports, so hopefully the results will be useable this time as well. I do understand where everyone is coming from, and I really appreciate you taking the time to either complete the survey or voice your opinion.

Yes I am. My family has always been interested in racing, and my sisters has been working in the racing industry for a number of years.
