I heard some rumours last year that Ataraxis had been impressing at home and then had a setback .

The front three in the betting - Telescope (6s), Kingsbarns (13/2) and Mars (7s) - are priced up as if they've already been out this season and impressively won a recognised trial. Times have changed and not for the better: Shergar was 10/1 immediately after winning the Sandown Classic Trial by ten lengths and he was still available at 8/1 on the Monday morning.

If Battle Of Marengo defies his penalty this afternoon in any sort of style, we'll have four shorter than 8s by tonight.

Stoute's Telescope has attracted a lot of the hype, but I am chipping away at Hillstar. His maiden win at Leicester looks strong enough given the exploits of the runner-up in handicaps, and he looks a well treated horse off a mark in the 80s.

He's Stoute's only entry in a 10f handicap at the Craven meeting that usually proves a good race. It was won last year by the Derby runner-up Main Sequence, and Stoute has targeted horses like Papal Bull and Doctor Fremantle at it in recent years having also targeted them at Leicester maidens.

It's asking a lot for him to win the Derby, obviously, though that hasnt stopped me taking all the 200+ on betfair but he has all the right entries, and definitely looks one to pay close attention to on Thursday anyway.

On Timeform ratings, Telescope is 97P, and Hillstar is 97p, so arguably not much between what they've achieved on the track to date.

Hard to enthuse over Battle Of Marengo after the Ballysax. Looks a sluggard, and probably no more than third pick from Ballydoyle at this stage?

I'd find it difficult to think they haven't got a few better than him. I know nowt about flat racing though.

Gus, it was a time to bet like men!:)

Quality. No free bets and all this pussy ****. :)

We've banned the word shite on here, the lizards are running the show maybe?

Now sure whether derby horse, but Amralah is a horse to punt, laugh at, or watch this season.

Gus, it was a time to bet like men!

And I did, Col - aftertiming alert - I was already on at 25/1 after Shergar's debut win as a two-year-old (predictably, he went out to 33/1 after his defeat in the William Hill Futurity) and Corals were a stand-out 8/1 the Monday after Sandown. I couldn't get out of work until dinnertime and by then Corals had cut him to 5s. However, there was a branch of Stanley racing nearby and I knew they didn't have prices of their own but had a policy of matching Corals' odds so I went in there, showed them the Coral advert in the Life and got the 8/1 from them.

My first really successful ante-post bet. I went to Epsom for the Derby and felt like a king as Shergar cantered home.

Similar with me. On the morning of the Sandown race Richard Baerlein gave Shergar a massive write-up and I availed myself of the 16/1:)....he really was a terrific racing journalist...the Master!

Nice story.
