THE BYRNE GROUP PLATE FACTS & FIGURES
1. The Byrne Group Plate is run under its current title for the first time in 2010. It was backed bythe Racing Post for three years from 2006 and was formerly known as the Mildmay of FleteHandicap Chase. The 2009 renewal was run as the Freddie Williams Festival Plate inremembrance of legendary Cheltenham bookmaker Freddie Williams, who passed away in 2008.
2. The first running, which resulted in a dead-heat between Slender (7/1) and Canford (100/8), took place at Cheltenham in April, because the last two days of the 1951 Festival were abandoned due to a waterlogged course.
3. 1990 saw the joint longest-priced winner - New Halen scored by eight lengths at 66/1.
4. Only The Tsarevich (1985/86) and Elfast (1992/94) have won twice.
5. The Irish have a poor record in the race, with only one winner in 58 runnings - Doubleuagain in 1982, trained by Andy Geraghty.
6. The fastest time for the winning horse is 4m 49.60s by Dark Stranger in 2000, beating the 4m 58.5s of New Halen in 1990.
7. The 2008 scorer Mister McGoldrick was both the joint-oldest and longest-priced winner of the race when obliging at odds of 66/1 as an 11-year-old.

BYRNE GROUP PLATE – Analysis
The two mile, five furlong Grade Three handicap chase was known as the Mildmay Of Flete prior to 2006 and this year’s race has attracted 81 entries.
Venetia Williams saddled Something Wells to victory in 2009 having sent out Idole First to success in 2007, and the former has been entered again alongside six stable companions including Green Belt Elite and Atouchbetweenacara.
Paul Nicholls is seeking a first win in the race and has a strong sextet that includes Jewson Novices’ Handicap Chase winner Chapoturgeon, I’msingingtheblues and Kicks For Free.
The last named was runner-up to the David Pipe-trained Seven Is My Number at Sandown in December. Pipe’s eight entries include 2008 Ryanair Chase hero Our Vic, a veteran at 12, who has been in fine form this term, as well as Great Endeavour and Consigliere.
The Sawyer, trained by Bob Buckler, won the Grade Three Betfair Trophy Chase over the course and distance on Festival Trials Day in January and was a fine third to Monet’s Garden in the Grade One Ascot Chase last time.
Nicky Henderson has twice trained back-to-back winners of this race with The Tsarevich winning in both 1985 and 1986 before Liberthine (2005) and Non So (2006) scored. He has entered the classy mare My Petra, Shouldhavehadthat and Aigle D’Or. Can’t Buy Time won the Grade Three Victorchandler.com Handicap Chase at Cheltenham on January 1 for trainer Jonjo O’Neill.
The 13-year-old Mister McGoldrick won this race in 2008 for trainer Sue Smith, while the Ferdy Murphy-trained Watch My Back and the Colin Tizzard-trained trio of Oiseau De Nuit, Mount Oscar and Cheltenham novice chase winner Hey Big Spender are also entered.
There are 15 Irish-trained entries headed by the Tom Mullins-trained Made In Taipan, fourth in last season’s Grade One Irish Independent Arkle Trophy Chase.
Grade One winner In Compliance was fifth to Joncol in the Hennessy at Leopardstown in January for trainer Dessie Hughes, who has also entered last season’s Grade One Punchestown Champion Novice Chase hero Rare Bob, while the Tony Martin-trained Northern Alliance landed the Kerry National in September.
The Edward O’Grady-trained Sky’s The Limit won the Coral Cup in 2006 and was third behind Anothercoppercoast at Leopardstown in January, a race in which the Willie Mullins-trained Jayo was runner-up, the Arthur Moore-trained Plaisir D’Estruval was fourth, the Jessica Harrington trained Fantoche fifth and Offshore Account from the Charlie Swan yard seventh.
Noel Meade has entered Aran Concerto, successful in the Grade One Powers Gold Cup at Fairyhouse in April, while Tom Taaffe has engaged 2008 Jewson Novices’ Handicap Chase hero Finger Onthe Pulse.

I'm hoping In Compliance's class will ensure he compete's today. Has a good lump of weight but i expect him to be thereabouts, just may find 1 or 2 better handicapped. Couldn't compete in the Lexus or Hennessy on heavy ground but on better ground today, against nothing of that grade, and being a super lepper i'm hoping he'll be coming up the hill with a right chance.
