A woman who refused to pay her council tax in protest at the condition of her neighbourhood has been jailed.
Josephine Rooney, 69, who lives in Hartington Street, Derby, has the £800 to pay, but said the city council has failed to clean up her area.

I think I saw a programme a year or two back about this woman's neighbourhood and how it became the place for addicts to come and shoot up.

She saw it as her Christian duty to bear no personal grudge towards the addicts, indeed the opposite. She was giving out tea and sandwiches to any of them who knocked on her door, to the point where they regarded her as a minor saint and grub at her place became a standing fixture. Several addicts were quoted saying what a lovely woman she was who always treated them with courtesy and respect.

But at the same time she felt strongly about the decline of her area and considered that the local authority were largely to blame. By now half the solid houses on what used to be a pleasant street are uninhabited. The programme recounted her many efforts to get the council to take some action.

Her protest, it seems to me, is more than an attention-seeking response to the latest rise in council taxes.
 
On the other side of the coin, I (unfortunately) watched some of the Wright stuff on Channel 5 yesterday morning when they had a caller on from the same street. He stated he rarely see's any needles, rarely see's any drug addicts (well apart from the ones this woman actually cooks meals for, and therefore encourages around to the area) and there is nothing like the problems that she says there is.
