RTE would have you believe that Ruby will be retiring very shortly. Ted in tears. Shots of family etc.

The greatest of them all, so good that Willy and Paul Nicholls were willing to share him for ten years rather than do without

His genius was in that he called his own shots

Got out on his own terms in one of the great all time races

This is a golden era of jockeyship and the master bows out

His list of horses is breathtaking when you think of them all

Definitely on the cards for a while but still a great loss to the sport, for me much more so than AP's retirement.

What a classy way to bow out - poignant that he wins the race at his local track in that fashion from Paul Townend who will take over from him at Mullins

We are in a great era of jockeys and he was the very best of them IMO - a long time before we will see his like again.

The greatest of all time in my opinion-so many great rides -Dun Doire is one that has been forgotten over the years.

A real racing icon, and certainly the best I've seen. Good luck to him in his retirement, but I wonder - will the lack of his input affect Willie as much as it did Paul Nicholls?

Ruby will still be a major cog in the Closutton wheel I imagine unless otherwise stated.
What I want to know is what did Archie and Perpetual say to him that brought this about ?
Great that he is in one piece and not stretchered off the racecourse like so many more.
Delighted I was there for such a moment in racing history , the end of a great great era.

That's the way for a great jockey to go out. Kemboy will always be remembered as well now.

What did Archie and Perpetual say to him?

Good horses make good jockeys........but you've got to be a demonstrably-good jockey in the first place, to get on the good horses.

No question he is one of the best I've seen in almost 30 years following the sport. His retirement is well-earned.

There's never been a better National Hunt jockey that could judge pace and run his own race. A bad ride from Ruby was a rare thing, and almost always he got the best out of his horses.

He's certainly been the best of my lifetime which is no mean feat when AP was around for most of his career. We'll all be lucky to see the like of the pair of them again. Both freakishly good in their own ways.

A sad day but also one to celebrate.

Can't add much that hasn't been said, only Francome may have been better. Sad to see some of the regular jockeys hanging up their saddle noww, Ruby and Noel Fehily in particular.

Ruby was a bit like Lester when working the new horses.

Willie has plenty of good work riders. Casey the best by all accounts.

I can't see him bothering with it when he has so many strings to his bow.

Nailed on to work for Willie -he needs the Cheltenham buzz next March -will do every conceivable nixer and possibly drive Willie cracked.

I could see him taking on the flat side of Willy's operation. Trips to the Melbourne Cup, Royal Ascot and the like, buying yearlings for Richbags.

Recall an interview a couple of years ago in which he said if he were to become a trainer in the future it would be as a flat trainer.
