Sandown/Aintree Saturday

I was on Mendip Express (who got a poor ride) but didn't mind losing out to such an admirable old beast (the horse, not fonz).

Well done, fonz!

PS - I thought there was a very interesting beaten horse to take out of the race (apart from Mendip).

I thought Mendip got a great ride, crept into the race without using up too much energy and almost won.

I thought Poole Master was fantastic in the Grand Sefton, one of (if not) the most impressive displays I've seen so far this season (all things considered).

I'm not sure what the plan is for him now, but jumping like that he deserves his chance in the Grand National. Whether or not he'd stay would be the 64 million dollar question but you never know with some natural progression/improvement.

If only I could suss out dosage indexes or had a clue on that front I'd be studying his tonight for sure....

R.I.P Oscar Whisky.

He was held up off a moderate pace then was asked to make his move as the pace picked up. If he couldn't go the early pace I can accept the rider gained him the best possible placing in the circumstances but I suspect he could have, at worst, raced alongside Chance Du Roy throughout and picked them up more easily. We'll see what happens as the season unfolds.

What is it about the National course that allows SWC to make others look like amateurs?

PN's Dodging Bullets won the Tingle Creek like a good horse.....how that fat fooker does it I have no idea but he just keeps winning these big races

I could have won that Tingle Creek - carrying you, tanlic - like a good horse.

These televised Saturday valuable races are what Henderson and Nicholls and all the others are all about. The smaller aspirational trainers are also saying it in the interviews after they've won. "These big Saturday races are what put you on the map" etc etc.

Week after week, it's the form in these big races that gets franked.

About the TC, though, it looked awful beforehand. Somersby (and McCoy) made the race yesterday, running and jumping like his good old self and the fact STD chose (or was put up on) DB over the 'unlucky in the Champion Chase' Hinterland, suggested that he was maybe better than his public form. (I was on poor old Oscar Whisky, who was never jumping well enough.)

Can I ask yous guys a question about Dawalan yesterday? Am I the only one who thought Jacob was only pretending the horse was under pressure after the second-last? I thought it was classic wave the whip in the hand away from the stands but don't hit the horse, just make it look like it. I thought he was a non-trier at that point but then he switched, woke him up and he flew home. I reckon that horse is a lot better than the bare result.

No, you are not ! :)
The In-Running layers on Betfair were fooled too -- offering 350/1 about Dawalan at that point.

I couldn't believe my eyes after Jacob pulled him out from behind the fourth horse and zoomed. That strategy took a lot of confidence -- confidence that was clearly not mis-placed. Dawalan obviously had so much left in the tank and was far better than the final winning margin might suggest.
