There seem to be a number of promising 7lb. claimers about.

One who has especially caught my eye the last couple of weeks is Andrew Mullen. He has an excellent record on his rides for Kevin Ryan's stable.

I think if you can catch on to an exceptional young jock when he has such a claim there is a profit to be made.

Any trainer who has a fancied runner would like to put some icing on the cake by the horse having several pounds more in hand whilst not losing anything in the saddle.

Any other claimers who you feel will make it to the ranks of top-flight jockey.

Colin

Adam Kirby (claims 7lbs) has been receiving plenty of rave reports.
Danny Tudhope (claims 5lb) is one to keep on the right side of,tactically very good and has just spent some time work riding in America which will have done him good.
Over jumps Robert Lucey Butler (claims 7lb) seems to be getting better as he gets more experience, gave his fathers' horse Geography a very cool ride yesterday.
Patrick Merrigan (claims 10lb),based with Heather Dalton and has had a couple of winners already from a handful of rides.

If you can spot a decent female claimer you really can be quids in as horses they're on tend to be overpriced.
Rose Davidson (rides Bohemian Spirit at Newcastle today) has an excellent strike rate this season, done particularly well on Diamond Mick.
Nina Carberry always worth keeping an eye on when she comes over to the UK (as we saw at Newbury on Saturday)
And Jemma Marshall based with Gary Moore, rides over both codes and gave Jalohaur a tidy ride at Wolves recently, not panicking when the gaps didn't come, bided her time and got a tricky horse to win a shade cosily in the end.

James Davies (3 lbs) is doing well at the moment. I'm a big fan of his recently, he's been riding superbly and I've made a nice profit backing his rides too.

James Davies is a brilliant rider - very, very calm and balanced, and a Plumpton specialist. Arkers, glad you mentioned Robert. He comes from a lovely family: his dad is a small (almost microscopic) trainer, his mother Eileen - a darling Irish lady - runs the stable canteen at Plumpton, and his sister Pamela helps out on racedays but teaches tennis. He had a smashing win at Plumpton followed by the unfortunate tumble of the debuting chaser MADISON AVENUE, but he's a very useful 7lb off any horse's back.

Jemma's been riding out for Gary Moore since forever, her dad's the starter Warren Marshall, so she's been in a racing background since childhood. A tall lass, but managing the weights, and fearless, too. Broke her arm badly last season in a fall from her first ride in public and couldn't wait to get back up!

I think you have to know which trainers rate these claimers first.

My first inkling is to regard a 7lb claimer as a 7lb penalty, or an indication that another day is in mind.

I agree, though, that if you can find one that trainers feel can do the job it gives a two-fold advantage:

1. The horse will have less weight to carry.
2. People/bookies who regard the jockey as a penalty might end up allowing the horse to go off at better odds.

Very slim, Martin, quite tall, lovely golden-reddish hair, slightly freckly, good even features, good teeth, and a couple of body tattoos... :o

I've been impressed recently with the amount of good, girl apprentices out there; one thing the all-weather has done is give them their chance to race-ride more often & build up their experience & strength. I've seen several girsl riding well lately who you wouldn't have said watching the race "that's a girl on board" as they look every bit as tidy & strong as the lads which is not easy with a girl's physique.

Thought I'd resurrect this subject.

I've been watching quite a lot of all-weather racing recently (apologies to those who think it should be abolished) and the riding of Leonna Mayor has caught my attention.

She seems very composed and doesn't panic, gave Thunderball (trained by Dandy Nicholls) a great well-judged ride from the front at Kempton on Thursday.

I hope she progresses.

Leonna Mayor has been riding for a few years now. I would be very surprised if she is going to take off. It seems she gets on well with Thunderball, her record on anything else isn't to be shouted from the roof tops.

Personally think that Charlies Bishop of Mick Channon's has a very big future and also agree with Dom that Jerry McGrath is a quality pilot.

Arkwright with Nina Carberry - "always worth keeping an eye on", which she has certainly proved most ably since.

Leonna Mayor's record by year:

2009 8 rides 0 wins

2010 44 rides 1 win

2011 14 rides 3 wins.

Not a very big sample but she hasn't been around that long, Chris.

Charles Bishop:

2010 8 rides 0 wins

2011 9 rides 2 wins

Jeremiah McGrath:

2008-09 2 rides 1 win

2009-10 6 rides 1 win

2010-11 33 rides 8 wins

She spent a month or so with Peter Grayson too Colin - in a big yard now that will give its apprentices chances so she should get more chances.

And before that Phil McEntee who I see is now giving Danielle McCreery a few chances as she makes a comeback.

Two I'll put forward are Tony Kelly based with Ferdy Murphy who has already ridden a winner or two over fences for the stable.
The other is Killian Moore based with Graeme McPherson who particularly impressed when making all on Wake Board at Catterick a couple of weeks ago.

See, I told you Jerry was a good pilot!! Seriously, as Chris says, he's quality. We'll hear a lot about him in time to come.
