Shrove Tuesday 2025

Shrove Tuesday - the day when I eat pancakes, enjoy them, say to myself: "I should eat these more than once a year" and then don't eat them again until Shrove Tuesday the following year.

I've had past flirtations with French crepe-style ones with Grand Marnier and Nutella, but nowadays it's back to simple lemon juice and a bit of honey.

It's next Tuesday - 4th March - can't wait.

If I may say so myself, I make a pretty mean pancake although I accept that 'pancake' can mean different things to different people and cultures.

I've seen what I make described in recipe books as 'dropped scones' but they sound like the kind of thing I'd expect my late lamented heinz to have guiltily whipped away God-kissed-it-devil-missed-it style before I'd got the chance to rescue said pancake.

'm trying to lose weight so was seriously thinking of letting Shrove Tuesday go unhonoured, if that's the right word, but I can see me making a batch or two even if I have to eat them myself since Mrs O is trying to get herself back down to a size 8 before Orchidette's wedding this summer.

My preference is to have one covered in an inch of butter and another covered in an inch of quality jam but butter and jam on the same pancake would give me the dry boke.

Just sugar normally but, for special, with banana and either honey or cointreau, topped with ice cream.
