We're probably going back to the late 80s/early 90s but does anyone remember the Irish bloke whose party piece was to hop from pub to pub in the town centre during festival week and deliver an impeccable, word for word impression of O'Sullevan's commentary of Dawn Run's Gold Cup?
His mates used to quieten the pub down and he would sit perched up on the bar and deliver the whole thing from start to finish, sometimes through a rolled up newspaper, to give his voice a bit more resonance.....invariably it would absolutely bring the place down.
In the closing stages people would be screaming the Mare on and hats, newspapers and often the odd pint or two would go up in the air as she crossed the finishing line.
For some reason his voice was very special even if his commentaries lacked the finesse of some much better readers these days.
Bit like "they think it's all over" "It is now" PO will be remembered for a very long time................"the coolest guy in town "1st number ? Attivo owned by Mr Peter O'Sullivan" and never missed a beat.
Great guy. Met him at Cheltenham 2013 in the frost and fog.
He has not been there since; I have that effect on some people !
Happy birthday Sir Peter, your "Calling The Horses " is still one of the funniest racing books I ever read.
