... my AVG (thank you, Galileo - it's excellent) just finished a scan, but when I went to click on for one of my Favourites, the column had been shrunk to about half its width! It's now very narrow, so that against the title for Talking Horses, it reads 'Ta... ' and that's it. I've pressed a few random bits and bobs, but nothing's restored it to its usual width, where I can read all of the Favourites' titles. Anyone got a clue how to redress this, please? Okay, it's not life or death, just mildly annoying, but I'd prefer it as it was if I can get it back.

Why can't these softies leave bloody things alone, they change things for the sake of it!
Which browser are you using Kri?

Windows IE, Walsy. I get fed up with computers deciding for themselves how they'll present information, etc. The damned recycle bin (why is it called that? It doesn't recycle anything - it trashes it.) readjusted itself secretly and without prior permission ages ago. I don't care about that, but this little thin strip of a Favourites list is a bit of a pill.

Flippin' 'eck, Walsy! That's absolutely brilliant! I can now read more than the first two or three letters again! Thank you very, very much for your excellent detective work, Monsieur Poirot!

It all gets too much, doesn't it? Big, brash and breezy e-mail from Virgin today announcing how they're going to muck up my e-mail and more or less insist we Virgin customers use their home page and browser. I realised I'd got more browsers after they all wanted to install themselves, so managed to dump them as the Virgin one uses Google to search, anyway. At some point, my mouse-sized brain won't be able to cope with all these innovations - view your e-mails from outer space, send entire films to your friends through your keyring, etc., etc. Aaaaieeee!

But all that drivel aside, very many thanks. That's truly helpful.

It's difficult when you are a lone operator as you don't get advice directly from other people. Lots of things are easy enough to do if you are shown how to do it, but awkward to explain in words of one syllable.
The Virgin page is a pain, go to "tools" at the top of your screen, scroll down to "internet options" and a window will appear with your current home page high lighted. Simply hit the button "use blank" and it will do what it says on the tin.

Not only being a lone twerp at the keyboard, but finding the three 'computing for total airheads' books I have just don't cover all these little oddities. In fact, they often quite nicely tell you how to do something, but not how to undo it! Just thinking you tap the buttons in reverse order doesn't work. Thanks for the further tips, Walsy, much and always appreciated.

Having a minor problem myself actually.

My girlfriend has me using Google Chrome recently (damn sight smoother than IE alright), but the Windows Media Player plug-in doesn't seem to work. Googled it and seems to be a fairly common problem but after trying a few of the suggested downloads, it's still banjaxed.

Any ideas would be appreciated. I've already tried turning it off and on again.

Replace it with VLC:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

It's free & works v. nicely.

"VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player supporting most audio and video formats (H.264, Ogg, DivX, MKV, TS, MPEG-2, mp3, MPEG-4, aac, ...) from files, physical media (DVDs, VCD, Audio-CD), TV capture cards and many network streaming protocols......."
" It doesn't need any external codec, program or codec pack to work."

Hope that helps.

More nonsense! Since Virgin revamped its homepage, it seems to insist we Virgin users use it as ours, too. Since when I can never get the pc to go straight to IE when I want it. I don't know how the things are related - maybe they're not! - but when I looked up the Error Reports I finally sent to Microsoft, the answers were all the same 'server not recognised' or something like that. I rebooted, and did the Start - Run - iexplore about:blank in the Open box, which said 'IE No Add Ons', all to no avail. I have to give up trying to open IE, go back to e-mails, get the box which announces the browsing session ended suddenly, and ask it to go to the home page.

I really can't stand the thought of 3 years of my life on the line to Virgin. Does anyone have any idea how I can resume normal transmission to IE, please? I guess I could chuck Virgin as my homepage and revert to the BBC, which worked fine - although I've forgotten how to do that! Any thoughts will be most gratefully entertained!

Oh, and we were told to put Virgin in our header, although I never use it (above Google at the top of the page). Maybe it's all too much stuff for my pc to cope with?

Had a few beers tonight, will try to think of a way out tomorrow.
Could always send out the fiery cross of course, and descend on Cher Branson with bagpipes skirling and kilts flying!

to change the homepage just go to tools, options then enter the new homepage there

Sorry for tardy 'thanks', gents - been away for a couple of days, hence delay. It's awful, forgetting how to change homepages. I put TH onto my Desktop and am accessing IE through that, which works fine, plus it gives me instant access as it's the first forum I go to anyway (how sycophantic is that?!). Will fritz around with homepages anon, but thanks mills.
