Southwell

Jord broke the gates meaning it was a false start.
Unfortunately all the riders (apart from Chris Catlin) continued to race.
As they ran the full distance they were disqualified and Catlin was able to walkover on Rebellious Spirit.

Certainly should be some extremely hefty bans, its not like they couldn't see the flag man

So anyone know what happens with bets?
I presume there will be no rule 4 or anything?

Didn't have a bet in the race so just curious :)

Very interesting from a betting perspective ~ I've laid the front two in the market win and place, which means I should be quids in, but I reckon that the races is essentially void for betting purposes.

Strange one this

If the 4 were disqualified then surely all bets stand, no different to a race where horses take the wrong course.

If it was a walk over then sure its a one runner race, and all others should be settled as non runners?

Both the above have been mentioned as being official.

From the betfair forum

28. (xii) (a) Should the Starter consider that through any faulty action of the Starting Gate or Starting Stall a fair start has not been effected he shall declare it a false start. The Starter may also declare a false start when a horse(s) has broken away before the race has been declared "Off". Whenever a false start has been declared the Starter shall order the Riders, by means of a recall flag, to return to the Starting Post.
(b) Where the recall flag is raised without the orders of the Starter he shall nevertheless declare it a false start.
© Unless at least one Rider returns to the Starter after the recall flag has been raised for a false start the race shall be void.
(d) Should only one Rider return to the Starter and satisfy him as to his having obeyed the recall flag, his horse shall be considered as having walked over for the race. Should more than one return the race shall be started again as soon as the course is clear.
(e) Following the recall flag horses which complete the course in a Flat race or which complete a circuit of the course or fall in a Steeple Chase, Hurdle race or National Hunt Flat race shall not be considered as having obeyed the recall flag and shall be withdrawn by the Starter. The Riders of such horses shall be regarded as having committed a breach of these Rules.
(f) Should the Starter declare a false start and the recall flag not be raised the race shall be void unless all the horses pull up before completing the course in a Flat race or a circuit of the course in a Steeple Chase, Hurdle race or National Hunt Flat race, and return to the Starter except that any horse which falls before completing a circuit of the course in a Steeple Chase, Hurdle race or National Hunt Flat race shall be regarded as having satisfied the requirements of this Sub-Rule but shall be withdrawn by the Starter.
(g) The Starter's decision on all matters covered by parts (a) and (d) of this Sub-Rule shall be final.

In the case of a false start, does it matter if any horses complete the circuit? If the race is to be re-started, is it not simply a matter of whether or not those horses who ran the race are withdrawn, which would then trigger Rule 4?

If it's a false start and they cross the finish line Gareth as I understand it all who complete the "race" are DQ'd leaving the other to complete the race.

Reading the Betfair forum (yes I know I shouldn't) they've mentioned something about DQ's leaving just one horse in which case it's classed as a walkover and all bets are void for betting purposes.

Well I've been credited back my bet on the race.

Surely this is the relevant rule:

(d) Should only one Rider return to the Starter and satisfy him as to his having obeyed the recall flag, his horse shall be considered as having walked over for the race. Should more than one return the race shall be started again as soon as the course is clear.

.. and if it's a walkover then it's void for betting purposes.

Surely the relevant word is "withdrawn". There is no mention of horses being "disqualified" anywhere.

False start drama at Southwell
by PA Sport staff

THERE was drama at Southwell after four jockeys in the Great Family Holiday Deals @ pontins.com Handicap failed to stop after a false start had been signalled.

Andrew Elliott's mount, Jord, appeared to burst through the stalls a fraction before they opened, which led to the starter calling a false start.

Although the flagman further down the track indicated to the jockeys to pull up their mounts, only Chris Catlin aboard Rebellious Spirit obeyed the order. Elliott, Kirsty Milczarek on Dado Mush, Pat Cosgrave on Hucking Heat and Paul Mulrennan on Rigat all went on to ride a finish, with Jord crossing the line first.

Catlin returned to the start and galloped out the mile to record a walkover.

The stewards later confirmed the four horses who continued to race after the false start were officially withdrawn by the starter.

No starting price was returned on Rebellious Spirit and all bets on the race were refunded.

However, a number of firms announced they will pay out on Rebellious Spirit'sfinal show price of 10-1, with all other bets void.

The circumstances are covered under Rule 28 (xii) of the British Horseracing Authority's guidelines, which state: "Should only one rider return to the starter and satisfy him as to his having obeyed the recall flag, his horse shall be considered as having walked over for the race.
"Following the recall flag, horses which complete the course in a Flat race shall not be considered as having obeyed the recall flag and shall be withdrawn by the starter.

"The riders of such horses shall be regarded as having committed a breach of these rules."

Peter Hiatt, the trainer of Rebellious Spirit, was grateful for Catlin's quick thinking.

"It's all credit to the jockey really," he said.

"I think one or two of the other riders started to pull up - I certainly saw them looking through their legs.

"Chris was lucky to be on the outside and in the best possible position to see the flag. He said he shouted to a couple of the others but they didn't stop.

"The horse out in front probably didn't see it, to be fair.

"I didn't really back him, I just had a little bit on as he was a big price at 10 or 11-1.

"I could have run him again tomorrow as he's not had a race but he's not entered anywhere. It will have to be a seller now as he's just got a penalty for handicaps."

Betfair said: "Rebellious Spirit was the only horse that did not complete the course after the false start and was therefore allowed to re-start the race.

"The official result is a walkover and according to our Rule & Regs all bets on this race are void."

I bet the latter judgement would not have occured if the FAV was the walk over horse????????????? :angy: these bookmakers make up the rules as they go along................I bet not many were on a 10-1 shot in a five horse race????

What are you getting angry about it for, they're giving away money they don't have to. Maybe you'd like them to pay out on everything as a winner just in case.
