An occasional thread to bring up every now and then when you think of a strange tribe.

Strange Tribe number 1 are the Vikings.

All that rape and pillage.

Very strange.

Be honest, terry, what else were they going to do with their spare time? You spend weeks planning an invasion, stocking the longboats, getting the sails trimmed, sail in rough and stormy seas, risk life and limb fighting your way onshore, and have to lumber all the gear off the damn boats just to start cooking your dinner.

So, what to do with the days and months stretching ahead now? Play Brag, Pic-up sticks, or charades, or start pleasuring yourself with local lovelies, and knocking down their crappy old huts to put up the first Ikea warehouse? Now, I said, be honest...

They came over later in baggage class, terry, to set up nail bars and hair extension salons. After being ravished by the Viking hordes, local lasses craved a little glamour.

Bloody hell you learn something new every day - that wasn't in my history A level England 900-1154

Yes, that's exactly what it was, and we've been taking our revenge ever since. The trouble is that the younger generation's geography is not as it should be. Amsterdam, Dublin and Prague are not in Vikingland.

(Although those whose history is slightly better will know that Dublin is sort of halfway)

Estonia seems to be a new favourite for stag weekends as it is cheap - though again not the source of Vikings .

As is Amsterdam. And most of northern Europe. And quite a bit of southern europe if you want to push the point.
