This forum has no filters on it therefore anyone can post or join .

The old ezboard had a swearing filter but this forum does not . Over the last few months swearing has become much more common on the forum .

I may use swear words from time to time but I don't like coming across the C word or even the F word on this forum .

OK it is a forum largely populated by adults but I was into racing from a very young age and so are quite a few kids and they are the most computer literate of all . If I had say an 11 year old racing mad kid I wouldn't want them to come across swearing like we have had recently on here .

Views please .

Why should this forum be different from what you come across in everyday situations everywhere.

I don't codone the use of foul language and I certainly don't use it in front of females, strangers or children. But those that object to its use are fighting a losing battle I'm afraid.

Sad days! h:)

Tricky one this. As one who encounters swearing every day from children, they will find nothing on here to shock them.

However, I do think that swearing is unnecessary and I find it irritating. I would hope that people on here are educated enough to express themselves without pointless profanity.

If not, F%*$ off!!

I don't mind swearing, but context is everything. If it's part of a slanging match, and personal abuse is being hurled, it should be out. If it's part of saying 'what the fcuk was that moron doing up the inside rail?' it has to be taken in context.

I don't at all like the 'c' word, but sadly that bastion is being broken down by gratuitous overuse all the time, and even Ted seems determined to import it from FF, where as 'cnut', since they have filters for swearing which only recognize the word if spelled correctly, it passes muster. Thus, a filter won't stop a misspelled version of a swear word.

If the swearing gets out of hand, then I suggest we Moderators delete the posting. However, I'd like it to be an effort by all Moderators, not just one or two getting slagged off for being twee. Also, if a poster gets reported for repeated offensive language, we ban the fecker.

Due to the press of political correctness intruding upon every aspect of British life, good old King Canute, wot tried to hold back the tides of the sea, now has to be spelled 'Cnut', supposedly a proper Scandi version of his name - heaven forfend we Brits should ever misspell a foreign word! It's now commonly used in lieu of the properly-spelled, but pejorative, cunt. Now, have we all got over it?

krizon, Cnut was the origianl spelling, Canute has always been the Anglicised version, he has never been King Cunt. Or have I misunderstood your posting?

(Anyhow, I know who King Cunt is - he's involved with televised racing...)

That is just bollocks, swearing isn`t just a refuge for thick people with limited vocabularies. The Sopranos, Pulp Fiction, Curb Your Enthusiasm are three examples of art that wouldn`t have been as effective without the gratuitous fucking swearing.

Brian, I know all that - (amazing, but true!) - I was saying that Cnut is used as a euphemism for cunt, which is a bit twee, when why not use the unpleasant word, if you must? I don't like it, but it's just a word. The sky won't fall, and I don't think by typing it, the Hand of God will reach down and cru

Derek - this is a thread about one issue - hence your wholly off topic posting has been deleted as will be any others

I'm not so sure that I can subscribe to the "11 year olds may be looking in" theory - apart from anything else, don't you have to be over a certain agae to join in the first place? Secondly, this is not a site for children - it is populated almost exclusively by adults - and if they came across "the F Word" on here it isn't going to be the first, or the last time they will come across it either. What is wrong with using the odd swear word? Many people swear & will continue to do so regardless of what other people think. What happened to freedom of speech?

Paul - I could accept your views had I not heard you swear on many an occasion. To have a go at people for swearing, and stating a lack of intelligence for it is just a little hypocritical I feel, as well as very holier-than-thou.

How do we know it is populated almost wholly by adults ? There are hundreds of silent members SL . Thus there may be quite a few kids on here

Who have to be over a certain age in order to join, as per the board's rules, n'est-ce pas? Besides, it is not meant to be a site for children - it is a site for adults. As I said before, kids (in fact anyone) will hear swearing wherever they go on a daily basis anyway - it's not as though they will be unduly corrupted by reading the odd swear word on a forum!

I never ever use the C word, I despise it and I hate to see it written here too. I've no objections to mild swearing but I'd rather not see stronger words here or anywhere else.

SL - what sanction is there on under 18s they can fib and get in.

In fact checking the registration stage there is no requirement that a member is over 18

I thought they had to tick a box saying they were over a certain age? That;s what I'm talking about.

Besides, of course they can lie & get in - but does that make it right? Plenty of kids lie about their age for all sorts - should 18 certificate films for example be censored because kids aged under 18 might lie to get in?

That's by the by anyway - this isn't a police state, is it? Clamp more & more restrictions on people & the forum will be all the poorer for it.

There are many comments on here that to me are more offensive than the F and C words. It's very much a personal thing. Anything that can be spoken on the BBC after the watershed can't really be considered a candidate for deletion/amendment on the grounds of taste.
The comments that could be a basis for legal action need policing but, like kri, I prefer to see co-operation between the moderators in this regard.

I am afraid Dom that is totally over the top - swearing is only ever used for emphasis or abuse - how can that be a police state to remove it ? I think it needs to be seen in proportion

No such box exists under 18s can join legitimately

Here's a very slightly doctored post from Simmo from a wee while ago, which may or may not have featured in the starting of this thread. The question is does the use of the "c-word" make the post appreciably funnier?

"I hate fannies. :angy:

For PDJ's benefit, I am indeed swearing here. I am using the word, not in the sense of the female anatomy, but more in the sense of the colloquialism.

ie.

Teacher: Johnny, did you write Teacher Smells Of Fish Poo on the blackboard?
Johnny: Naw. It wiz some ither fanny.

or

Polis: Young man, I am afraid I have to inform you that you are under arrest.
Young Man: Moan then ya radge fanny, ah'll take ye right now ya polis basturt.

So, to all of those people collectively known as fannies. I hate you."

Incidentally, I thought it was interesting to see Germaine Greer look into the history of the word on BBC2's Balderdash and Piffle the other day. It certainly inspired me ~ I spent fully 5 minutes shouting "Get off my telly, you C*NT!!!" at the screen. :D
