As one Mod to another, Ardross: would it not have been an idea to have run this past us first, before just launching it on an unsuspecting forum and other Mods? And what brought it up, anyway?
I don't like the 'c' word one bit, or its gratuitous overuse, here, there, or anywhere. I don't like it disguised as cnut, either, but IN THE RIGHT CONTEXT it can be very funny - as per simmo's post. Not that long ago, we'd have read novels which included "D--n you to h---, sir!" - which left me totally confused and fearing something far, far worse. Then damn and hell became acceptable, then b-----, then b-----d, and then even (gosh!) 'bloody bastard'. You can probably blame 'From Here to Eternity' for some of this sort of thing.
Regardless of your poll, I'm not going to censor anything, including swear words, on the grounds of individual taste. I find a number of jokes on here, unedited by you, distasteful. I don't censor them, or ask for them to be removed. I don't even pretend that precocious children might be looking in and being corrupted by a forum which is primarily for racing - not something an 11 y.o. can attend without a supervising adult present, by the way - verily, unto the age of 16 shall they be turned away.
I don't like censorship UNLESS things are taking up Col's bandwidth, which is supplied free to us, with endless sniping and bickering. Then I feel quite happy to close a topic if it's being ignored and is just a vehicle for bitching.
We already have Board rules, when people sign up, that preclude abusing people personally, or of making remarks likely to cause offence on the grounds of race, religion, colour, etc. I think that's enough - calling a specific forumite, for example, a 'queer spic' doesn't make it more offensive if he's called a 'bloody queer spic'. It's offensive as it is.
