Techie Help Needed

It is all sorted now. He downloaded it from Firefox and then Internet Explorer was objecting to it, or some such gubbins!! Sorted anyway and thanks to all on here.

Gareth, it wasn't working and saying it wasn't on the computer even though it was so he wanted to redownlaod it.

Could I piggyback this request for techie help with one of my own, please? I've got Norton running quite happily on my computer, but I did install McAfee some time ago, and then uninstalled it. The Uninstall went fine, but I'm left with an annoying box that springs up on the Desktop announcing that some McAfee components may not be loaded, etc., and won't go away. I can't find anything on 'Desktop' that lets me clear the thing off. I have to hit the 'OK' every time I logon in order to get online, and I could do without it. Does anyone have any idea how to dump it, please? (I find it's really odd that it shows up since there's no McAfee left anywhere to drive it.)

HOOOOOOOOOOOORAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY!!! :D

Gareth - I owe you a supersize Guinness or whatever you drink! :D The darn folders were stuffed with McAfee, even though I'd Uninstalled automatically months ago. Well, well, well. One just doesn't ever know where these thing lurk and hide! So the annoying little box has gone, thank you VERY much indeed!

Erm... presuming on your good offices for just a moment longer, what I did notice in my cruise through the caves and dungeons of my pc, was that I'm gifted with three Java settings, and I wonder if this is right? I have two with the little cup of coffee logo:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4 118.00 MB
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 119.00 MB

Then without the coffee cup:

Java 2 Runtime Environment SE v1.4.2_03 135.00 MB

Just wondering if there's any conflict inherent in having three similar functions? Your technical wizardry will be very much appreciated. And thanks again for the other exercise! Very fruitful. :)

I wouldn't worry about it. I think what's happened there is that when a new version was installed, it updated the installation of the old one but didn't remove the old one's entry in Add/Remove Programs.

Yaaarse, I thought so, too, but does that mean that the first one is still 'alive' and clogging up the MB? Should I Remove the 4 and just leave the 6 version, Gareth?

I don't think the first one is 'alive', I think it's probably pointing at the same installation as the upgraded version. If you're not having any problems with Java, and you don't desperately need the disk space, I'd leave it alone.

I don't even know what Java does, Gareth, let alone if it's being naughty or not! Trouble is, having successfully performed one function (thanks to you) I delude myself that I can perform others equally well. Such overweening ambition led to the previous pc having to be given emergency First Aid with the Rescue Disk. I'll leave it well alone, then! :D

:o Old adage if its working o/k!!! well don't try and fix it.....they sound like upgrades to me! how you have described them Jon one supersedes the other........

You need to do 3 basics things to a p/c to keep it working at its best......

Clean up old files

Defrag weekly

Check disc scan

THESE APPLY TO X/P

Check your firewall is active too………..

and the worlds your oyster???........................

What is Java Software?

Java software allows you to run applications called "applets" that are written in the Java programming language. These applets allow you to play online games, chat with people around the world, calculate your mortgage interest, and view images in 3D. Corporations also use applets for intranet applications and e-business solutions

I can't see a single reason why I need Java, frankly! But I suppose I'll have to leave the darn thing in the machine. I do a monthly full system scan with Norton and I use the computer so little I've defragged about once. I do clear out History quite often, though, and even occasionally enjoy compressing files.

While on the subject of defragging, I get the message that some files could not be defragged. Is this a problem?

Not really, its probably just various system files that are being used at the time by Windows and so can't be moved about.
