Ten to Follow comp....thoughts?

We sort of touched on this earlier in the year after the sad passing of both Col and Diamond Geezer. I think if possible it would be lovely to run a Ten to Follow using DGs excellent rules and have a trophy dedicated to their memory. I would be happy to organise the trophy but running the competition would be beyond me :whistle:

As regards to a trophy, I did post a picture of a trophy that organised for a Point to Point award and it cost about £95 including engraving. It would then have to be sent to the winner each year but it came in a pretty secure polystyrene lined box. The winner would have to get an engraving but small plaques are very cheap from somewhere like Timpsons can be stuck on.

What does everyone think? Is anyone willing to run it? I am sure we could all help out with compiling the list to pick from.

I'd be happy to help run it, and can do the ante post comp if folk are still interested. Only thing is I'm close to submitting my PhD thesis and don't have much time till that is done (end of October, all being well)

I think we used to start it round about then anyway? I know DG used to put a lot of time and effort into selecting the horses...but I am sure a few of us could think up the same sort of list.

Good luck to you, New Approach.

What is your PHD in, can I ask?

Could you not just use the same list as the raging boast or the telegraph ( assuming they still do one) ? Would save a lot of work right at the start.

That’s a really nice trophy - and the engraving and getting it to the next winner is how we do the anti post comp, it works pretty well.

I can help with setting up a spreadsheet if necessary. I'd recommend using google docs and then everyone can see the standings whenever they please. Updating it with the points would be the main job (not the inputting so much as the keeping abreast of when horses scored points).

A simple alternative is setting up a private league on the Tote website and using their competition.

Are we going to be able to get this up and running? Obviously I would like to sort a trophy out and want to make sure there are funds available to pay for it....IIRC the trophy above cost £95 so we need to think how we collect some contributions? I am happy to get it or I can copy the eBay link to whoever does.

Personally I feel being part of the RP league is not so much fun and would rather have our own.

Id take part. Absolutely no time to help run it on a day to day basis though.

Sad to hear DG passed away, I never knew, just thought he stopped posting.

I'm pretty sure you can set-up a private league in the official Tote TTF competition.

That would take the effort out of selecting horses, scoring, and you can check your points/position at any stage.

Is there any good reason why we shouldn't do it that way?

If anyone thinks this might have some value...

I have a website that I run
Could add a page titled 'talking-horses-ten-to-follow' (ie www. website.com/talking-horses-ten-to-follow)
Which could act as the summary/current standings page
Then subpages for each entrant (ie example www. website.com/talking-horses-ten-to-follow/chaumi ...www. website.com/talking-horses-ten-to-follow/jinnyj/... etc etc )

The entrant pages show the selections, with points scored, date points scored, and running totals against each (which I would update).
Once or twice a week, the main/summary page would get updated

Basic. I'm no website design wizard. Wouldn't have a clue how to auto-feed a spreadsheet into a webpage in real time. But doable manually.

I'd need someone to feed points scored into me (by name of horse, I could set up a tracker to cross-reference against owners and update that way). Note, we could even use the thread for this. If we get all entrant's selections in and then make a starting list, we know we just have to make a post when any of them scores and I use the posts to track and update.

I'm unaware of how this used to run. So maybe there was already a tracking mechanism that worked/works effectively.

Re cost of the trophy, I guess it's a matter of seeing how many are in and then splitting the cost appropriately? I would enter.

Yeah.... I like being awkward

We could maybe use a google docs spreadsheet to keep the scores updated - that way a few of us could share the load. I'd be happy (in November) to have a go at setting up a sheet with formulas to update members based on their stables and the points scored. That would probably be quite easy to maintain once the stables and spreadsheet were set up. I think the main workload in this comp is the tracking of horses once the stables are set up - I believe DG used to put them all in trackers and I would think that is a lot of work (I also wouldn't know where to start with doing this). We could probably just use the Tote list for the horses though - that's another thing I think DG put a lot of work into - although I guess we wouldn't need to start off with as many horses.

For the money, could we maybe set up a collection pot https://www.collectionpot.com/, we use that at work and it seems to work well. Maybe jinny could be in charge of it and then if there was any money left over from the trophy we could put that towards prizes.

I'm also happy to run the ante post comp again if folk are interested, it is easy enough to do as the spreadsheets are set up and although I won't be as quick as DG at posting the results I could manage it OK myself.

That would be great! I’m really keen to do something in memory of two great guys who gave us so much. It seems fitting to run a competition that keeps that memory alive.

Yes, me too. Roger and Colin gave so much time and effort to the forum and it would be lovely to honour that.

I'm also in the camp where time would prevent me running a comp, but as I have done for the last few years I'm happy to sponsor it.

So if it's okay with you Kirsty, and we can get it off the ground, I'll sponsor a £100 winners prize and a £50 runner up prize, and in addition I'll also cover the cost of the trophy.
