OK - Day Two. And as they are older there is more form on offer.....so it should be easier? Right?
F&M Sprint
My videowatch flagged up
Richi and Tamara and both look to have a good chance. Richi (Rishi is over there and will clearly be supporting her!) is dropping back in trip so needs to cope with the lightening early pace but if the pace collapses then should could pick them up (she's one of three for Baffert - also has
Hope Road who's work has been eye catching recently).
Tamara was a good 2yo winning the Debutante here but the wheels fell off after that until a recent revival.
Sweet Azteca has beaten Kopion who is strongly fancied for the Dirt Sprint so that form is strong.
Turf Sprint
I have long had a soft spot for
Khaadem (he won at Ascot at 80-1 for me) and the fact that he has the "shyly retiring Italian" on board could be the retirement gift he's clearly desperate for. He's been training out in the States since his last run where he won under Dettori at Keeneland so is well acclimatised. It has to be the perfect swansong for him? Plus the blinkers are back on to sharpen him up. In the video he looks well and was bouncing around the track.
Motorious was second here last year with
AG Bullet third.
Bucanero Fuerte I have always liked but he did look a little sweaty in the video. That said I would never underestimate him. I liked
Shisospicy in the video so she might not be quite good enough but my heart lies with Khaadem.
Dirt Sprint
I have mentioned
Kopion who they clearly rate enough to take on the boys here. She's got an inside draw which is not an optimum in dirt sprints here though.
Big City Lights is a big price but looked well in the video as did
Bentornato who was second in this last year to
Straight No Chaser. I think that form could be reversed and I will probably do him with an ew on Big City Lights.
Distaff
Not a race I have really looked at much so it could be a paddock pick race. I did note down that the fancied
Dorth Vader looked the worst of all my videowatches. Her coat was dull and she looked cold - which means she will probably hose in! Perhaps I should just go
Gin Gin as it's gin night here....
Turf
How can you not love
Rebels Romance? He's just a complete dude! And looks great on the track. I would just love him to make history winning for the third time. It's certainly possible but then this is a strong renewal.
Minnie is top drawer - plus she won at Chester despite being a big girl - and Epsom so this track she should handle.
Goliath who has been well supported, I watched the video and I know he has stringhalt but boy is it extreme! It actually causes him to throw a hind leg out galloping which for me is a worry around here.
Amiloc - yeah he's a good ew price and you can easily forgive last time in the Irish leger - he will also handle this track well but I will be upset if he beats the top two.
Rashabar! Another of my big priced spots. Picking up when he ran well to finish second at Chester despite being a huge beasty, he delivered at Ascot. But trip wise they have been all over the place with him. And now he steps up - bizarre but he's got talent and he's got speed and he could close at the end...if he stays. So he will have a bit of ew on him - 'cos I am soft in the head!
The Classic
Well don't let me put you off Journalism regardless of joint injections! For me it is a slight concern but they can be needle happy over there so it's probably nothing. I liked
Sierra Leone from the video very much - he has matured from last year and is a big strong colt now, he won the battle last year against
Fierceness and I think it could be the same this time.
Antiquarian beat Sierra Leone last time but he was hampered by a fallen jockey. That said the colt looks well in video and he may be my ew choice.
Mile Turf
I have long been a big
Notable Speech fan and I suspect this has been their target all year. Third in this last year he is much stronger and has tactical speed from a perfect draw. I think he will win.
The Lion in Winter - never going to get away from those foot issues in my head plus he's quite a buzzy sort who could boil over.
Sahlan is well fancied but only three and a big horse. I think next year I would have fancied him more likewise Jonquil.
Johannes has an ew chance and
Formidable Man loves the track here which has to be a bonus.
Dirt Mile
I thought
Citizen Bull looked really good on the video. He won the Juvenile here and was the Big Horse before things didn't go to plan. His stablemate
Nysos is fav but rumoured to have have foot issues when scratched before the Pacific Classic.
Tumbarumba has a great name and I always throw one in on that basis alone so he's my ew bet with Citizen Bull for the win.
Full Serano won this last year and has been primed by astute trainer.
F&N Turf
If anyone is still awake (I had to set my alarm for each race last night in case of dropping off) here's the finale which is a cracker.
Gezora the likely fav but her trainer says she prefers soft? Her dam got stuffed in 2006 too. Chad Brown loves this race but only saddles one this year in
Village Voice who is ex Jessie Harrington. She looks well and could have slipped under the radar a bit.
Diamond Rain finished behind
She's So Pretty (who I wasn't over enamored with in the video) but could have a good turn of foot when it matters to cap Billy the Kids season.
Cinderella's Dream should have won this last year but let me down - do I give her another chance?
Bedtime Story needs this quick ground and she has been bouncing in the videos so she's one to think about too.
See The Fire has a horrible draw but Oisin counters that in that she will have maximum assistance. She is clipped though and I though looked a bit dull in her coat.
