This Haydock Park contest was once a Pattern Chase (possibly run in midweek) and past victors include Cheltenham Gold Cup winners Little Owl, Forgive N Forget and The Thinker.

King George and Champion Chase winner One Man once landed it too.

But it's been a Handicap Chase over 20 years now.

I hesitated to add it, but there are 17 in it, they bet 5/1 the field and it's surely almost as interesting as Ascot's Silver Cup (once the SGB, incidentally - I think I remember Midnight Ciurt winning it in 1977) so I'm putting it out there.

Top Of The Bill and My Silver Lining (even though this trip would be a minimum for him) must have some sort of chance, but I can wait until Thursday, see how the ground is shaping up and what else is actually running and accept shorter on a RUNNER.

The Welsh National trip would be more suitable for My Silver Lining, but she is unlikely to get in off 120 or be some way out of the handicap if Haiti Couleurs or Mr Vango run. The current going at Haydock is soft ( heavy in places ) and there is rain forecast for Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday which will be a plus.
