The 2026 Lanzarote Handicap Hurdle

Just a Rose was my main bet a few days ago, likewise. I don't normally do tri-casts but just for the sake of having a Lanzarolio I'll pick two more from Came from Nowhere, A Pai de Nom, and French Ship

I think Saphir Du Rheu back in 2014 was the last time I found the winner of this race so it is not with much confidence that I’m having a bet.

That said, Skelton appears to be prioritising it nowadays even if his winners in the last two runnings weren’t obvious contenders.

This year’s is, with A Pai De Nom bearing all the hall marks of a long-term plot, being confined to very low-level races in order to look after its mark.

I still favour the novices in these races and this is the only first-season one.

Of the second-season ones, Lanesborough could be called the winner at halfway last time but he got a right hike for it and probably wasn’t targeting this. French Ship has also taken a couple of hits for winning decent enough races so I'm letting both of these go.

Krak looks overpriced at 50s and worth an ew pop but I reckon Iberico Lord will have a higher profile race as its target, maybe the Schweppes or the Coral Cup.

Fasol is worth a win saver on its Flat form when it was hitting three-figure ratings.

But expect the ITV people to fawn like fvck over Skelton if APDN wins and conflate it with the sad Langer Dan story.

Get the big white telephone ready to call Hughie.

Chuffed to see my friends' horse King of the Lake in there. They were all astounded by the Chepstow win so it would be nice to see him run well here for them.
I was on at Chepstow and loved the way it battled.

I have one good memory of this race betting wise, which was Boreham Bill a few years ago.

I'm still mulling over things before having a bet today.

If I was backing good memories etc I'd just stick with King Of The Lake.

But I never keep it that simple.

Maybe he needs 3m now - and he wins about as often as Walsworth cycles past a rabbit warren without attempting a drive-by shooting - but I wouldn't lay the 80 Ike Sport is on the machine at the moment.

Came from nowhere for me. Up in distance but think there will be some further progress.
I think it was always quite nice but had wind issues that I mentioned when I saw him beaten early on and his head was a bit awkward. Took a while to convince the Scott daughter (she's fairly dominant in her opinion) that he needed an op but as soon as they did, he improved significantly. I was looking forward to seeing him go over fences but I guess they will stick to hurdles this year now. Either way it's a small West Country syndicate of good friends all of whom I know and all live local to Jeremy and they are having an absolute blast.

After that is Just Ennemi in the Lanzarote Hurdle at 3:17pm, who was bitterly disappointing on stable debut last time out but his bloods came back wrong from that race so I’m hoping that was the reason he was so disappointing. We thought we’d go hurdling for the rest of this year with a bit of time running out for the rest of the season. He’s in great form, hopefully he can take a good step forward but he will need to.Harry Derham.

You couldn't hand pick a worse race to test that theory.

I’ve followed King of the Lake since he dotted up at Wincanton last February- except last time out at Chepstow (when I thought he had no chance 😡) and have to have a little bit each way (6 places) today.

I fear todays race may come too soon after his efforts there however

French Ship may be the one as I agree the handicapper may not have got to the bottom of him yet

You're not the only one who thought he didn't have much of a chance at Chepstow! His trainer was fairly surprised as were all the owners. But I think he's improving. At Newton Abbot when I saw him run, he was fat as a pig.

DO might've been on it. He was decently handicapped, if they stopped f$%^ing about with him.. I looked, but had shown nothing in 2 runs this season, so left it alone.
