Martyr ran a very good trial for this today - running close to three horse rated between 7 and 18lb ahead of him . The worry is not that he is not well in but that he might not stay - he seemed to curl up rather in the last furlong

Probably worth a few quid ew at 20-1 .

Any other fancies ?

Think Baker has done well to get this horse back to his best off such a lay off, but I don't think he'll stay the Ces trip. Even when he won over 2m at Ascot, they crawled round, and I think he'll be best at 12f/14f.

Cry For The Moon is interesting. Ran 2nd in top 2 mile handicaps here; needs good going, a fast pace and to pass through deadwood late on. Beaten by lack of pace over 1m6f at Leopardstown latest. EW at 25 -1 or better for Gentleman Jim Culloty.

love this race. Not really had a proper look yet (a big number to sort through at the moment). Usually interested if Johnston has one he fancies for this.

I have backed I Have A Dream in this when the entries came out. Gets in off 102 with a 4 lb penalty. Only blot on an improving copy book was when dropped back to 11f at Killarney. Eeked out a narrow victory lto at Leopardstown on ground that was probably too quick for him. Looks to be crying out for a trip and would be murdered with weight in the Irish version so hopefully he travels over. Plenty of rain would probably help his cause.

Regarding Martyr...

From George Baker's website...

''Thrilled with the run of Martyr. Fourth in the Listed staying race at Newmarket. Richard Hughes, who knows him so well from his pre-injury days, said he was better than ever. And judged by the ratings of the horses around him, this must rate as close to a career best effort....

I asked Richard what he rides in the Cesarewitch as he dismounted. He said that he rides Martyr and he wins !! Hope he is right.....''

Very keen on Lyric Street trained by Ed Dunlop here myself. I think the Mount Athos (John Smiths Silver Cup) form looks very strong with the winner now rated 10 pounds higher (118) after his subsequent group winning performance. Even the second horse High Jinx has run creditably in group events since. I don't think based on that many would argue Lyric Street is badly weighted. The key could be the ground. We havn't seen what the horse can do with cut in the ground and if it come up soft and he went in it we could see a big improvement. I got the impression he'll like some cut in the ground based on his breeding and he probably lacked a bit of toe on firm ground the last twice. A big price this one I think.

Could anyone in the know try and update this topic for me with the likely ground conditions. Cheers.

Would you take 4/9 about a horse who ran in the first 2yo race of the season in a Dewhurst nearly 7 months later-I couldn't.

I totally agree here Marble. 33s EW is massive. Drawn in 36 but if his talented apprentice gets over and gets a position before the bend, shouldn't be too bad. First time blinkers be interesting too.

Spencer rides Timinator for Jonjo-I'm intrigued.Could see him being a Coral Cup horse in the future after Jonjo gives him a decent education.

I don't see him as a stayer at all. He looks like finishing closer in that York race until he flattens out. I would much rather see him back in trip for the November Handicap.

Nothing makes more appeal than first reserve Montaser if one of his owners other declarations Address Unknown and Very Good Day comes out.

If I could try and say something to you on that one, DJ.

He was ridden prominently at both York (where the first two home came from the back) and Ascot where he practically took up the running 6F out, only to look like he'd be tailed off at the 3F pole, and then to stay on at one pace again to get fourth. So they have certainly not been holding him up as if these long distance trips will a problem in future races. He did flatten out at York as you say but it was actually at the time when some decent horses were being tailed off.

I also notice he veered slightly left at York towards the end, and having just watched the Ascot race I see his head carriage (or the way he moves his head) from left to right might mean he's a bit of a thinker, so if this apprentice can get him switched off on Saturday over a longer trip it will help him I think.

I hope your fancy at the bottom gets in btw.

my first tip for some time, I see BLUE BAJAN winning the cesarewitch, I know he,s a 10 year old and horse 8 and over have a dismal record but thats only because they are such a small percentage of the runners.

The horse can do the distance easy enough, he has dropped 15LB in the last year, been running well behind Sir graham Wade and Mount Athos, was running in group 2 races last year. 40/1 looks not bad value as I think he Should be maybe 16/1

Does anybody disagree and think I may be on the wrong one?

also think VERY GOOD DAY may have an ew shout too.

Blue Bajan is one of the outsiders I'd give a decent place chance for the reasons you've stated. Best of luck I couldn't put you off it e/w.

Love to see Blue Bajan win a race like this. I remembering backing him when he won the Swinton at Haydock a few years back.

Good draw, too. Have followed him for years. Bound to win now I haven't backed him. In fact, I may have to, now. Backed Right Stuff ages ago. Rush of blood to the head, I guess. At least he's running [albeit not very fast]. Was tailed off in his last run and will probably be so again tomorrow. Cosimo de Medici and Dark Ranger also, because at least they like Newmarket [rubbish draws, though]. Countrywide Flame seems to have everything.

Two against the field for me: Hurricane Higgins (officially 10lbs well in) and Countrywide Flame (in the hope he can translate his big improvement over hurdles back on to the Flat).

I've done Motivado. In the Ebor it looked like he'd appreciate a step up in trip so with a nice draw and five places he's worth a go.

Sir Mark's other runner Kepler's Law may run well also. By Galileo out of a Shirley Heights mare this will be his first run over more than 14f (I really cannot think why the trainer hasn't run him over further yet:ninja:)
