CORAL CUP FACTS & FIGURES
1. The Coral Cup is one of the newer contests at The Festival, having been introduced in 1993, but is well established as one of the season’s most competitive handicaps.
2. The first winner, Olympian, picked up an additional £50,000 bonus having won the Imperial Cup at Sandown Park the previous weekend. The bonus was put up by Sunderlands, bookmaking sponsor of the Imperial Cup, to any horse that won the Sandown race and went on to success in any contest at The Festival. Paddy Power, the Imperial Cup’s current sponsor, is offering a £75,000 bonus to any horse that completes the double this year.
3. The fastest time in the 16 runnings was set in 2000 by What’s Up Boys, who scored in 4m 53.8s, beating the previous best of 4m 57.0s set by Big Strand in 1997.
4. Ireland have won the race on six occasions, most recently with Ninetieth Minute in 2009.
5. Martin Pipe is the leading trainer in the contest, having scored three times with Olympian (1993), Big Strand (1997) and Ilnamar (2002). Among current trainers, Edward O’Grady and Philip Hobbs (What’s Up Boys 2000 &
Monkerhostin 2004) lead the way.
6. No jockey has won the Coral Cup more than once.
7. Both What’s Up Boys (2000) and Idole First (2005) scored at 33/1 and are they are the longest priced winners, while Olympian (1993) and Xenophon (2003) were successful at 4/1, the shortest priced scorers, and they are also the only two favourites to have obliged.
8. The 2008 winner Naiad Du Misselot was the first Festival scorer to get up by the recently-introduced new distance of a nose.

Coral Cup – Analysis
A high-quality entry of 123 has been entered for this year’s Coral Cup, one of the handicap highlights of The Festival, which this year takes place on Wednesday, March 17.
Despite being the leading current trainer at The Festival, Nicky Henderson has yet to taste victory in the two mile, five furlong handicap hurdle but the Lambourn trainer looks set to have a strong hand in this year’s race, having entered a bumper 13 horses. Andytown triumphed in the inaugural Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at last year’s Festival, while talented mare My Petra was runner-up in the Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase 12 months earlier.
Listed scorer Fairyland, Stravinsky Dance, Caracciola, Tasheba, Erzan, exciting novice Quantitativeeasing and the Queen’s Gold Award are also among the master of Seven Barrows’ entries.
Grade Two winner Mamlook and Listed scorer Mr Thriller spearhead a potential challenge of five from the stable of David Pipe, while a quintet of entries from Paul Nicholls consists of recent Ascot scorer Beshabar, the 2008 runner-up Kicks For Free, Qozak, Elusive Dream and Takeroc.
Other notable entries include Festival winners Silk Affair and Naiad du Misselot, who landed this race in 2008, progressive novice Inventor, Micheal Flips, James de Vassey and recent Haydock Grade Two victor Souffleur.
Irish trainers would like nothing more than to celebrate St Patrick’s Day with victory in the Coral Cup and a total of 29 Irish-trained entries includes the Willie Mullins-trained Mourad, who was third in last year’s JCB Triumph Hurdle and went down by a head to War Of Attrition in the Grade Two Boyne Hurdle at Navan on February 14. An octet of entries
from the Irish champion trainer also includes MCR Hurdle third C’Est Ca, Deutschland, who was second to Bahrain Storm in the Galway Hurdle, and the Grade One novice chase heroine J’y Vole.
Edward O’Grady has won the Coral Cup twice with Time For A Run (1994) and Sky’s The Limit (2006) and the Tipperary handler may bid for a third success with Jumbo Rio, who triumphed in the Punchestown Champion Four Year Old Hurdle last season, while Tom Taaffe, victorious last year with Ninetieth Minute, has entered recent Punchestown scorer Smoking Aces. Tony Martin, successful with Xenophon in 2003, may be represented by Montan and Galway Hurdle fourth Northern Alliance.

Hampshire Express for me - was really taken with him at Gowran Park and he looks a great e/w price.

I think we already knew the Greatwood was top form, but Kyhber Kym's second yesterday underlined it. I make James De Vassy a cracking each way bet for this. Let's hope Nick Williams can pop his Festival cherry today, I think he has an excellent chance with three of his best horses in action.

The handicapper has already reacted to the Greatwood form, though, and I think JDV is a long way higher now than he was even then. (10lbs I think.)

I think there are a couple of better handicapped entries today.

10 Pounds it is, but Medermit and Kyber Kym were running off 146 and 143 respectively in that race and they've both showed themselves to be a fair bit better than those marks. I'm hoing JDV can do likewise, especially over a longer trip.

I can't see Deutschland being beat. Think Quantitativeeasing could have been in the Neptune but they mut have gotten a much better Handicap

I thought and said the same here watching that.

Nick Williams made an awful blunder not running JdV in the County. Stamina a huge issue. Winner impressive, and had a lot in hand in all likelihood - Geraghty having a great festival.

Silverhand would have went much closer under a typical Carberry festival hurdle ride till he was hampered.

I think there are a couple of better handicapped entries today.

Spot on DO. The place money ensures i'm level for the day though.

Had James De Vassy each-way there, and had Peddlers Cross earlier in the day, so that more than makes up for yesterday's poor effort. Quitting while I'm ahead now, just have a little bet on Shannon Spirit in the Bumper.

Nick Williams made an awful blunder not running JdV in the County. Stamina a huge issue.

He was run out of it by speedier (and of course classier) rivals in the Greatwood on soft and he maybe thought the same would happen in the County on faster ground.

There won't be champion hurdle runners in the County though. Big mistake - I backed him each way so don't mind personally though I reckon he'd have gone very, very close in the County. Only Spirit River better than him before his stamina emptied.
