Here in Belgium a lot of publicity is in English. Rather than choose between French or Flemish and earn the everlasting hostility of the other language group, they prefer to choose a neutral language that is widely understood.

But a lot of it is cod English. Would you want to give your house a "lifting"?

And this evening I came across a new police recruitment poster: "Go For Police @ Brussels".

Isn't this more about the pitfalls of being Belgian, than about the English language, Arthur?

Plenty of people here of all nationalities tell me how much they like English, that the grammar is easy to learn and it's such a flexible language.

I'm reminded of the story told about Dr Josef Venglos, the first of the continental managers to be recruited to the Premier League to take charge of Aston Villa. After a few weeks he got irritated at a training session when players started sniggering while he was explaining some crucial aspect of his tactics. "You people think I know **** nothing", he said,"but I've been around for many years at the highest level, and I tell you I know **** all".
