The Writ Hits The Fan

They've just had 2 consecutive Africans of course, and 3 consecutive Europeans (admitedly Gladwyn Jebb was only in an acting role upon foundation) but Dag Hammersjkold followed Norways Trygue lie. My impression (rightly or wrongly) is that they tend to reward career diplomats rather than politicians who try and crash in on it. Indeed, I've got some recollection of Norways former PM, Gro Harlem Brundtland trying and failing last time up, and this despite her UN credentials appearing particularly strong. Wasn't Mary Robinson also mooted about at the last round too?

I'm sure the likes of Clinton would have more appeal than Blair if they were to depart from the unwritten convention, effectively setting up a rival court in New York to the one in Washington. An even more funnier prospect were his supposed wife to win the Presidency, given the US's traditional antipathy to the UN.

Where as a de facto office of World President would doubtless appeal to Blairs vanity, and you might even argue his skills? (reform and party management etc) I just can't see it

What is the betting, Brian, and which one is your money on?
No one is betting on it (though they are already betting on who will be the next Pope!) I wouldn't have a bet even if they were because the politics of the UN are so volatileas to make the choice as changeable as a woman choosing which shoes to buy. If I were making a book then Ban Ki-Moon would be my favourite.
