Thoughts on Royal Ascot

Purely on the steady pace set by Windsor Palace, I doubt the Tattersalls Gold Cup was ever very high on Camelot's priorities, and I'd be amazed if Al Kazeem were to confirm the form in a properly run POW

The problem with Dawn Approach is that the derby can take more out of a horse than expected . Rodrigo de Triano did not come down the hill and Piggott looked after him at Epsom yet he was then beaten into fourth in the St James's Palace behind Brief Truce and Ezzoud - horses he had cantered all over in the Irish 2000 and Zaahi who he was later to beat very easily in the Champion Stakes .

Agree with DO that can pick holes in Al Kazeem's form. Would like to back The Fugue in this, but waiting for Gosden to declare what the plan is. Mile and a quarter on fast ground is her best trip. She could have too much toe for Camelot and Al Kazeem, and I just think she's better than Maxios.

What's he playing at? I've backed Elusive Kate at 20s for the opening race but absolutely no word coming from him. It would help the build up/anticipation to this if trainers were interviewed in the weeks prior to the meeting with their hopes and expectations.

You must have a very low amazement threshold.

Given they had gone to the trouble of getting a run into him before the Tattersalls Gold Cup, I find it very hard to believe he was there just for a spin. Not like he has a Group 1 over 10f already on his CV either is it.

Elusive Kate is confirmed a "very likely runner" in Queen Anne Stakes

'Tattersalls Gold Cup' hardly sits well with 'Derby' and '2,000 Guineas' winner, does it though, DJ?
It's a poor early-season gp1, with not nearly the cachet (nor half the prize money) of the POW.
Expect to see a different Camelot contest it, too.

Have a look on the sportinglife website - some trainers have been interviewed on there for their thoughts and are available to watch online.

Elusive Kate, not seen since finishing third behind Excelebration in last October's Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day, also has the option of tackling her own sex in Wednesday's Duke of Cambridge Stakes, but is instead set to run a day earlier.

Patrick Barbe, racing manager for Japanese owner Teruya Yoshida, said: "At the moment, I would say she is a very likely runner in the Queen Anne on Tuesday.

"Mr Yoshida is coming to see her run. She is in the race on Wednesday as well, so plans could change, but so far the plan is to run on Tuesday. I think there is an 80% chance she will run there."

While respectful of the threat posed by Animal Kingdom, Barbe believes the five-year-old will be playing a "different game" in Berkshire.

"Animal Kingdom is a very good horse, but this will be a different game for him," said Barbe.

"Dubai is very similar to Churchill Downs (where he won Kentucky Derby) - it is a flat, left-handed track - but at Ascot he will be running over a straight course that is up and down.

"I wish him all the best, but it will be a different game for him."

I wouldn't be so sure. AOB thrives on winning these poor Group 1's early season and yes others of his have lost in them but Camelot had the benefit of a run only 3 weeks beforehand.

I would have thought after his 3 poor displays after the Derby AOB would want to grab anything he could with him and there would be no question of sending him racing below par..

If he was something special I could see that being the case but imo he's grossly overrated and AOB was selling the racing world yet another lie when he said he might be the best he'd ever trained

I too felt Camelot was over-rated, but this is a bit of a stretch.

He is a triple Classic winner, and was a dodgy drugs test away from a Triple Crown.

And although he has hyped up a lot of his horses, he is not unique in that regards, and I am struggling to remember any of his lies. Can you remind me?

A strtch....you pulling my chain? He's full of crap

Hype and lies are the same thing when it comes to AOB......all part of his job, he totally over does does it and it's boring hearing the same shyte every other season being aimed straight at the sheds

Gawd help us if he wins this poor event It'll be he wasn't right last year! I blame myself! I was training him wrong or "So You Think" because I said so....crap crap crap.

Brief Truce improved vastly for the fitting of blinkers, but the main issue was that Piggott got caught out watching Arazi. When Arazi was unable to take him into the race, due to the fast ground, Rodrigo De Triano was left with far too much to do against better ridden rivals.

I have seen Animal Kingdom, Sea Siren, Shea Shea and Shamexpress in the last couple of weeks.

Animal Kingdom is magnificent, but was very fresh and spooky for a horse who has seen everything. I wonder how much hard work he has had, but he does have a record of going well fresh which indicates they know what they're doing and I can see why they use headgear on him.

Shamexpress is awesome. He would be as impressive as Scenic Blast when that one appeared a few years ago, whilst the other pair would be more j j the jet plane. Ie) not winning.

Have put something together for Timeform on the top 20 juveniles to have run so far.

Full article can be viewed here

But list of the horses is as follows

Timeform's Top 20 Juveniles (as of 10/6/13)
109p Stubbs
108p Sandiva
107p Coach House
103p Thunder Strike
101p Saayerr
100p Anticipated
100 Heart Focus, Rizeena, Sacha Park
99p Toormore
98p Astaire, Beldale Memory, Ertijaal
97p Najm Suhail
97+ Justice Day
97 Club Wexford, Steventon Star
96p Fine 'N Dandy, Green Door, Peniaphobia

Informative as ever. Love going through the 2yo races at this meeting.

Disappointing that neither of the front two from the Leicester maiden won by Toormoor go for the Coventry.

What do you make of Bunker for the Chesham? Thought he looked tailor made for the race when he won in Haydock. Difficult to assess the form of that maiden; the time looks nothing special on the face of it, though the Noseda yolk in third won today.

Thanks Trackside

Bunker definitely looks on the radar for the Chesham, but not a race I'd have a strong view until the decs.

Agree with you about that 2-y-o Leicester race. My horses to look out for list is taking a hell of a beating!

Looking forward to seeing Ogermesiter (101p) in the Windsor Castle. Obvously very different conditions but he looked impressive on debut (click here to watch)

Hughes suggested Bunker was his best ride of the week according to John Hunt on ATR on Friday .

ou the man Clivex.
Keep us updated please ; thanks for the sterling work last year for various meetings.

You taking the ****? :) Anyway it was like fcking Manchester this morning. Cold and wet. Bit of rain came down that wasnt expected

But. Really turned this evening and feeling quite warm.

Really turned this evening and feeling quite warm.

Hope it stays that way. Ever since the 2011 Doncaster Cup I've been waiting for a combination of fast ground and a strong pace at two and a half miles for Saddler's Rock. Rite Of Passage probably wouldn't even run on faster than good.

Lay of the week for me is Battle Of Marengo. I thought he had the run of the race in the Derby. I was confident he'd stay but I'm not sure he did and in any event plenty of horses have flopped in the King Edward after running at Epsom.
