Tolworth Hurdle

Do we think he's the best of the five horses PN has entered though ?

Far West, Irish Saint, Irving, Ptit Zig, Sametegal.

It's not about who is best, DG.....it's about who is best handicapped. Besides, if he's swerved the Tolworth, he would now appear to be more-or-less confirmed for the Newbury race, whereas targets are perhaps less clear-cut with the others.

Followed. Win or not he's a great trading opportunity and will likely go off favourite when the hype starts.

Dan Downie, racing manager for Axom, said: "We are going to run in the Betfair Hurdle instead. He is in good form and it gives us a better run up with Cheltenham in mind.
"If we ran him on Saturday we would have to let him down before building him up again. We think he can be competitive off his mark in the Betfair and we would hope to run in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle."

In the last 5 years;

2013 : My Tent Or Yours - won Betfair, 2nd Supreme
2012 : Darlan - likely would have won Betfair but for falling, 2nd Supreme
2011 : Recession Proof - won Betfair, 5th Supreme
2010 : Get Me Out Of Here - won Betfair, 2nd Supreme
2009 : No Race

The Gold Trophy/Betfair would appear to be an excellent prep for the Novice event, probably due to proximity and the experience gained from the hustle and bustle of a large field, often run at a decent clip - as opposed to potentially falsely run small field novice races.

Interesting that while the "winners" ran well at Cheltenham, none actually won.

Either way, I've been happy to punt horses in the Supreme that ran well at Newbury in recent years and with my ante post Irving voucher (plus a saver on Vautour), I'm chuffed Nicholls is taking this route.

Maybe this year I'll lay some off if he sluices in though :(

Of course that's another way of looking at it :D

but having backed both MTOY and Darlan in both events in the past couple of years I am determined to get the double up...

Since 1989 there have been 67 Supreme Novices runners that didn't contest a novice hurdle in prep race and they all lost, 21 of those losing horses had placed in a valuable handicap or Graded or Listed hurdle against experienced rivals.
