Trainers In Form

We all take trainer form into consideration in one way or another, but is it not completely priced into the market?

I agree up to a point but there is also the view that working with trainer, jockey or horse info, numerical or other, not available to the world & his wife, helps provide an edge

I don't have the pawras-esque stats to back it up, but isn't it the "sudden" - and maybe "unexpected" - aspect of change that creates temporary market value?

An out-of-form trainer suddenly hitting form (like in the last hour or so) or an unforecast torrential downpour significantly changing the ground.

The latter is climate change's most redeeming quality in my book.

There is that, but there's also just having better numbers than other people e.g. not all speed ratings are of equal merit

I'm going to take a risk here and offer some well-intentioned, but unsolicited, advice and just hope it doesn't offend anyone.

TH, like life, is an opportunity to learn and none of us is ever too old to learn.

If anyone thinks they know it all, they are putting a glass ceiling on their own ability to progress and improve.

I've been in the racing and betting game literally 48 years and I'm still learning - and often from younger (well, younger than me) punters who are always those most likely to bring new thinking to the table.

I read TH voraciously and soak up good thinking like a sponge.

Here's the delicate bit.

No offence, honestly, but I think some here don't take in a word they read.

They ask the same questions week after week, they express surprise at things they've been told countless times.

"Slim is Irish and used to work in the betting industry?"

"pawras is into stats?"

"Maurice does his own ratings and loves a spreadsheet?"

Ok, these are extreme manufactured examples, but they're not far off the truth in some instances.

Whatever your "bag" - or if your "bag" changes from week to week - there's liable to be someone doing it at a high level here already and being kind enough (because they don't have to) to share bits of what they have learned.

TH is a great resource and imo, rather than myopically using it as a blank canvas for whatever system/method you're into, have a good read of it, find out what everyone else is doing.

My Dad (who I quote far too much considering when he was alive I disagreed with him half the time 😂) once said: "The average person learns from their mistakes. A stupid person doesn't and repeats the same mistakes. But a smart person learns from other people's mistakes and never makes those mistakes themselves."

TH is populated with people who have tried countless things, honed their approach and are happy to report on it.

So the next time anyone is considering an angle, take a good look at what others are already saying about it and what their general approach is and if you can take value from it.

The better you "get" what a forumite is about, the better you can benefit from what they're saying - read it, remember it, build a picture and retain it,

Best of all everything here is my favourite word - FREE - so it would be simply rude not to milk it for all it's worth.

I’m very happy with what. I’m doing thank you very much. My bank is not increasing I admit but it is pretty much intact after a few peaks and troughs. I started this bank about 18 months ago at 200 points, it has peaked at 322 and the nadir was 108, it now stands at 209.

I will continue putting my selections up for a while just for the hell of it. I have learnt a lot over the years particularly from an old friend on another forum who I think may no longer be with us. I admit that I still lose discipline in particular by chasing losses occasionally.

I’m happy to share my thoughts rather than just hint at how clever I am. At the end of the day backing horses is a matter of opinion not an exact science.

In the words of Alf Garnet, “I’m going down the pub”!

Sounds like you've got a pursuit that you enjoy that in the last 18 months hasn't cost you money - in fact, you're currently just in front with it.

How many non-punters can say that?

Many spend literally thousands of pounds finding other ways to entertain themselves - that's what so many who don't bet just don't understand.

Good for you, walsworth and all the best with it going forwards.

Exactly the words I have used to people that don’t bet. One particularly unpleasant former colleague used to delight in telling me how I was wasting my money. His hobby was growing Alpine plants and travelling around the country showing them. How much he spent on his boring little plants over the course of a year and how he got any fun out of that, God only knows!

Slight changes to the list.

Appleby, Charlie
Burrows, Owen
Haggas, W J
Johnston, Charlie
Morrison, H
Owen, J P
Prescott, Sir Mark
Rothwell, P J
Tickle, J

The list would be interesting if the trainers make the list but haven't had a winner yet.
