Trainers In Form

Possibly too early to say that the combo of Ollie Greenall and Josh Guerriero but they had two winners with their only two runners at Cartmel on Monday at 33/1 and 11/2 and their only other runner over the obstacles since a short break, Alshadhian, finished second at Worcester last week. They only have one other jumps runner out this week and this is the one that i had my eye on for Hexham last night but they took it out. The trainers also pulled this horse out from a race at Uttoxeter on Monday.
The horse is called Crookbarrow and for the few people on here who know me and the lads from the previous forum i was on, this horse is just my type and fits in with my MO.
Low grade jumps races and horses with a little bit of something hidden away in the form or a snippet of some sort is what i have always concentrated on and there is a little something in this horse that tells me that it may just turn out to be a bit better than a 71 rated chaser. It will be having its first run for the pair and i have no doubt whatsoever that they will improve it. The horse was running in points earlier in the year and won a race at Parham although it did finish alone and was also placed on three other occasions. The form doesnt account for a great deal but then again the opposition will be no great shakes either. And if the pair can coax that improvement out of it, it my turn out to be a well handicapped horse.
But the thing that caught my eye was its third pacing at Peper Harrow last time out in May. The winner that day was a horse called Steppingstone and this thing started life at Willie Mullins yard. It was beaten at 4/11 in a bumper first time out at Kilbeggan before being placed at Ballinrobe and Killarney before finishing down the field at Listowel which turned out to be his last run for the yard. It came over this side of the water to join Nick Wright and won two of its five points and could possibly have won another.
The interesting thing here is that the horse has now gone back to Willie Mullins so there must be some thought that the horse is not a lost cause. And everybody and his dog will know that Willie will get plenty of improvement from it. It may just have needed a bit more time. Who knows ?
But the form may not turn out to be that bad and i am certain that Ollie and Josh will improve Crookbarrow. And then that mark of 71 will look very generous indeed.
Who knows ?????

It is entered at Worcester on Sunday so it may be worth tuning in and keeping an eye on it. Unfortunately, i am away on Saturday for 10 days but my mates are on stand by if required. :)

Have a good day all.

Parham and Peper Harow are tracks I've visited many times.

FWIW, Crookbarrow earned a Point rating of 85 for his third place in that Peper Harow Restricted: Surrey Union at Peper Harow, Surrey, Weatherbys Point-to-Point

The ratings are supposed to be on the BHA OR scale, but IMO they are often wildly inflated and flatter Pointers who often than get found out under rules.

But this horse is undoubtedly interesting off 71 (or even 74 if he has to race 3lb wrong) as there is just a chance he's improved Between The Flags.

A fascinating observation from you, QC, and I'll watch Sunday's decs on Friday morning with interest.

PS: Are we sure the Peper Harow winner has gone back to Mullins, or has the RP just not updated its database since it left him?

That may well be a good call mate but i have checked on ATR and a couple of other sites and they all say Mullins. But then again, if they all use the same database, its like what i say about all the mickey mouse firms who copy and paste Powers prices every day. If Powers have priced one wrong then everyone is wrong.

I dont suppose i could ring Oor Wullie to ask him but a call to Nick Wright wouldnt go amiss. :D

Even without the Mullins/Wright saga, as you say, there is a chance it has improved between the flags and no doubt Messrs Greenall and Guerriero will improve it further.
We will see. :)

My further thoughts -

Negatives

1 I think the Mullins thing is best disregarded. The Peper Harow form is what it is.

2. Worcester, where they often overwater, is a lot different to Peper Harow (which is like Cartmel) on quick ground.

Positives

1 The move to a professional trainer is an upgrade

2 The new owner apparently paid £8,500, which is a fair lump for a 7yo who had a few tries in Points and only has a lousy Maiden win to show for it and a Restricted third so he must see something in it.

3 71 (even 74 if 3lb wrong) is a mark so low you or I could probably make the frame off it - if it's any good at all that's a gift.

4 It is bred to be better than it's shown so far, but tbh what moderate racehorse isn't?

You've piqued my interest for sure, though - thank you!

I've never visited those tracks but i bet they are nice. I'm northern based so my pointing days were at Easingwold, Sheriff Hutton, Whitwell On The Hill, Hexham's point course, Corbridge, Mordon etc etc.

Happy days. :)

Good stuff.

It all started in Points for me at Dalton Park in 1978 - most of my Pointing since has been "dahn sarf" and in the Midlands, though.

Before going pointing Crookbarrow was trained by Cynthia Woods quite close to where I live. Her training base is roughly halfway between Crowborough and Wadhurst in East Sussex. Her form figures in the Racing Post for the last five seasons are two wins from 132 runners with a further nine horses placed. The Wealden clay may not be an advantage.
Another horse moved from Cynthia Woods is the five-year-old No Guarantee - currently rated 79 over hurdles - and trained by Max Comley at Naunton in Twiston-Davies land. He's only had a full licence since November 2024. No Guarantee's last four runs have produced form figures of 3423, and the trainer had a 22/1 winner at Worcester on 20 August with Jullou De Grissay ( rated 104 ). He's got a few horses entered for Worcester on Sunday, but not in Crookbarrow's race. Needless to say I hadn't heard of him until I looked up some of the past form.

Good stuff Jayhawk.
The horse was indeed trained by Cynthia Woods and i am in no way being disrespectful in any way, shape or form but i can safely say that there are better trainers around. Many better trainers :)
So the only way is up for the horse..........hopefully. It may turn out to be useless but its also possible he has a race or two in him (unlike my namesake :()
And if anyone can get improvement out of the horse then the Greenall/Guerriero duo would be on the short list.

We will maybe find out Sunday.

All these have a better than 30% strike rate over the last 30 days.

Bromhead, Henry De
Burrows, Owen
Candy, H
Crisford, Simon
Curling, S
Fellowes, Charlie
Haggas, W J
McBride, P J
Mullins, W P
Murray, Adrian
OKeeffe, Jedd
Tickle, J
Walford, Mark

I’ve noticed that Dr Newland has been running a lot on the flat recently albeit only winning if I don’t back them. Jedd O’Keefe seems to be a trainer that people ( eg JP) seem to send horses to to sweeten them up a bit given that his stable is in a nice part of Yorkshire.

Trainers of interest today.

Chamings, P R
Dunne, M
Elliott, Gordon
Newland, Dr R D P
Owen, J P
Tate, James
WD walsworth Owen's Carlton just goes in @ 11/2 (wouldn't be right just to post this so I'll add that I had an interest @ 7.1). Was undecided where to post this but I'll visit the aftertimer thread at a later date.

I don’t often post my bets because I often don’t make my final decision until a few minutes before the off. The list is compiled using the criteria that I mentioned a few posts back. I hope some may find it useful and those who don’t, can, in the words of Dionne Warwick ‘walk on by’.

So your list is useless, sound.
