Is there a particular mob it's better to travel with. Last time I was on one the only choice was the old British Rail sit on everybody elses filth special.

I find it is generally better to travel with "the mob" that operates the journey from wherever you are to wherever you want to go.

I take it that was a silly question? I'm talking Glasgow-London as opposed to a half hour journey down the road. Surely there must be some differences between the companies. Do they all have restaurants? Are they all the same speed?

The main difference that I have noted between them is that one goes to Edinburgh and then down the east coast line (GNER) and the other goes down the west coast (Virgin?).

I would further recommend taking a leaf out of Maurce's book and purchasing food and beverages beforehand.

Time and cost wise I am pretty sure they are about the same. Last time I used GNER but I have no idea if this was for cost or timetable/availability reasons.

If you take the west coast line you can wave at my mum on the way by for me.

Hot news just in. Mrs Simmo has informed me that the reason we used the east coast was because it was cheapest. Fortunately it also has the most interesting countryside to look at as well.

I work for Virgin Trains on the West Coast Main Line. The train we use from GLC to EUS is very fast (125mph on some stretches) Book in advance for a decent price, and at weekends you can pay £15 for an upgrade to 1st class.

Corporate whore! :D

Yesterday morning, I read in my paper that Chiltern Railways (which I use everyday) has performed as the 2nd best train operator in Britain in the last year.

This morning, the following announcement was made on my train:

"Ladies and gentleman, we are now arriving at London Marylebone, where this train terminates. We apologise for the over-crowding on this service. This is due to lack of carriages".

Superb.

Thank f*ck I don't have to travel with the 3rd, 4th, 5th or 10th best operator.

The Orient Express is quite nice
Brian, funny you should say that, my in laws (to be) are going on a trip with the Orient Express group (I think they go with The Northen Belle) tomorrow. We paid for it for their Christmas prezzie last year where you purchase a voucher and then they could choose wherever in the UK they wanted to go. I have to be up at Victoria Station at about 08:30hrs tomorrow morning and pick them up again at 4pm. A great excuse for me to do some retail therapy in London while I wait to bring them home. For a special Birthday prezzie, or anniversay etc. this is an ideal gift for train and non train lovers alike.

I hope they like spending time with train spotters. The usual script when the Northern Belle stops at my station is that it gets tanked or they do an engine runround, whereupon most of the men onboard alight and take photos.

Euronymous, my father in law to be, still has a working Hornby train set in his garage! B)
