I completely agree

Here in Spain is the same, when there is a terrorist attack or and earthquake or a plane crash.
I think persons die and no matter the country.

What has happened in Asia recently is the worst natural catastrophe of a long time and lets hope the money and help we are sending will be well used.

I found these satellite pictures of Banda Aceh. The first was taken in June the second on 28th December. Shows you how much destructive power the sea truly has

My mates cousin is in Phuket now and was luck to be on a trip to the mountains when the Tsunami struck. On returning she thought there had been a terrorist attack. Arriving back at her hotel she found that there was no hotel!! Washed away. She lost everything including passports and will be there till Jan 4th.

The UK government's cash contribution (excluding that donated by individals and businesses) is now the largest contribution by any state.

No doubt governments will now start vying in a piety pissing contest, but the USA's current contribution represents .023% of its' outlay for the invasion of Iraq. Yes, that is a point in front of the figures.

On a very slightly more positive note, anyone wanting information on Phuket can access the Phuket Gazette website and see what's being done to clear things up. Apparently, a US Marine is a bit miffed that while clear-up efforts are now so good that people are actually back sunbathing on the beach, no news reports are showing the rate of clear-up and normalization of many services brought by relief efforts.

It was sure to appear the critics for the bastard yankees.

It is sure they will aport ,as always, most of the money and help for the reconstruction and when Europe forget the tsunami they will continue with economic plans to restore the situation of the zone.

suny, while you are right about the normal generosity of the USA, and its thought for the rest of the world, this particular regime has not displayed it.

Remember, it was Bush who tore up the Kyoto Agreement, to which Clinton had agreed.

The Bush government, despite its policy of free trade for all, imposed 30% tariffs on the import of steel from Europe and Japan.

The World Trade Organisation, which polices world trade, has ruled that a tax break given to American exporters, like Boeing and Microsoft is illegal under international law and gives an unfair advantage over competing companies in other nations. The US government has so far chosen to ignore the ruling.

Companies other than those based in the USA were not allowed to tender for contracts to rebuild the infrastructure in Iraq.

Just a few examples of how this particular US administration differs from some of its predecessors.

But the news is good - the USA has gone back to its old ways and has multiplies its initial contribution by ten!

As well as money, the affected countries are in need of skilled technical help in many areas.

The charities in the UK have now collected £45m.

Tomorrow Cheltenham racecourse will donate £1 for every person attending the meeting and there will be collection points there for individual donations.

USA has many deffects but in these kind of situations they are more generous and efficient than us (the europeans))

About the Kioto agreement
I am against it.
It is a shame and is designed to benefit France and Germany. It is an hipocresy of plan.

I agree totally with prince regent....why the hell is our illustrious leader still sunning himself in Egypt?!

I'd also like to point out that from Midnight tonight until 6th January, for every bet placed with Victor Chandler we have promised we will pledge £1 to the Tsunami appeal; we guarantee a minimum donation of £150,000. I'd like to say a big well done to Victor for this; & everyone says that bookmakers are robbing bastards!

Another idiot appears how sick can people get? :angy: :angy:

Hoaxer sends death email to tsunami relatives
LONDON (Reuters) - A hoaxer pretending to be a British government official has emailed relatives and friends of people missing since the Asian tsunami disaster, saying their loved ones have been confirmed dead, police say.

The hoaxer, claiming to be from the "Foreign Office Bureau" in Thailand, targeted people who had placed appeals for information on the website of Sky News.

Police said they were taking the hoax very seriously. All the messages came from one bogus email address, ukgovfoffice@aol.com.

"The British government would not use email to convey news of the death of a loved one," a Metropolitan Police statement said. "Anyone receiving such an email should treat it with utmost caution."

Sky News said it was "disgusted" at the abuse of the message board on its website and had contacted police as soon as it was alerted to the hoaxes

In fairness lads, it's a bit harsh to have a go at the media for their coverage of their catastrophe. Unfortunately with something like this, you've got to try and make news appear fresh - everyone will be covering the same thing and papers and TV will always be looking for a new angle and normally an uplifting survival tale is what people want. It sells papers.

We all knows thousands of people are dead and millions homeless. Somehow, I feel slightly more uncomfortable watching a camera look at people who have absolutely nothing and are absolutely distraught - I'm sure the last thing they want is that. It's only natural there should be a mix and I think to criticise the media is very very harsh considering the important role they have played in the establishment of contact between those there, and those here

In truth if it wasnt for the coverage and the pictures it would have raised so much money. These images have hit people hard.

Irish people have so far raised 7 million and the government is giving 10.
