Hands up if you mark the passing of your whole adult life by this day/week.

First a quick catch-up on yesterday. Level stakes bets were on +107.6.

As is often the case on the pre-Cheltenham Monday, yesterday was like the calm before the storm. Very limited worthwhile bets:

The Tom Weston runner was interesting at around 22 in the Stratford bumper in a 7-runner race. Looked like he might go win it throughout the last furlong until the final 2-3 strides. Beaten a head and an inch.

Missed Tee, similarly up in the 20s for the Stratford Hunter, I haven't backed the Tee for years. But with young Lucas Murphy up, a good run did look a possibility. And so it proved. Ran well, Lucas tried to go for a gap up the inside of the hot favorite on the final bend and came off worse - either bumped, slipped, or both. Shame, if he'd got through, it could have been a closer battle to the line.

Song Of the Stars drifted out to a backable 13 for the 8.30 at Wolves. Should have been suited to this 12 furlongs after three tame runs in Kempton mile maidens. Disappointing, but will get another chance if up in the 20s somewhere.

So, another 3 down and +104.6 heading into the big day. The week needs to be about keeping a cool head, but let's see, sometimes that's just not doable:

Supreme Looks super tough. I will probably stick with long-term (well, since Christmas) fancy Talk The Talk.

Arkle Pretty impossible to split Kopek and Lulamba, slight preference for the latter.

Fred Winter Dignam for no more than 50p shits and giggles.

Ultima If the real Handstands turns up, they may need binoculars to see his arse. Looks attractive at 14-1.

Champion Any one of 5 could win it and no one will blink in surprise. So I'll stick with Day 1 of the season pick Anzadam at the prices for entertainment value.

The Plate Downmexicoway is the obvious one, but not at around 7-1 (good grief, robbery!) Risk, Jipcot, Booster Bob, Madara, even No Questions Asked - none of them will be a surprise.

NH Challenge Cup Grand Geste and King Of Answers. Both stables in form, both have strong chances on paper at reasonable prices. Pic Roc could carry them all.

Wednesday looks hard in the extreme, will have to see the Exchange prices and play race by race. No obvious fancies.

Hopefully, by this point there will be several trebles and 4-folds going on to one or two of these. We can but dream! It's 16 years since the last proper one. 16 short years. It's time! Wherever you're watching from Dad, can you have a word in the ear of whoever can swing it?

Triumph No idea

Mares Chase Diva Luna and Panic Attack

Albert Bartlett Espresso Milan

Gold Cup Wide open. I hope Ben's wins it.

Good luck to anyone reading.

At the very most it will represent just over 1% of my betting turnover on the entire year.

I love the meeting and, if, like me, you bet horses you think are "the wrong price," you can't help but get involved.

But I was once with "Leafy" and some numpty and the numpty said: "The best thing about the Cheltenham Festival is everything is trying."

To which "Leafy" replied: "That's interesting, because the worst thing about the Cheltenham Festival is....everything is f*****g trying!"

It's not so much about the bets and the betting - the 3 bets yesterday (that all lost) all gave me better winning chances (at the odds) than I'm likely to get over the next 4 days at Cheltenham.

One of my earliest horse racing memories is my Dad saying back in 1975 or thereabouts ....words to the effect of..."Cheltenham son, the best racing you'll ever get."

And we watched and bet together through those next ten years. Willie Wumpkins, Little Owl, Silver Buck. All the old names.

What would I give to have him standing next to me when Imperial Commander jumped the last in his Gold Cup.
