Altogether dreadful, wasn't it, for me yesterday?
Achille, in particular was a a no-show and I am very disappointed at that performance.
Hello Judge ran no sort of race, either. It seemed the jockey was completely unconcerned by the position of his horse, who languished way off the pace all through the race. Why the pilot never, ever, put him into any sort of of contention is one of those 'racing' things that I just have to suck on, like the bitterest of lemons. Not good.
I've picked four for today and I simply wish for some sort of run from them. I don't mind if they're beaten but If I see them 'not at the races', I shall not be pleased. However, I should add that these, on a day like today, are, really, sporting bets more than anything else.
My main three would be:
Super Survivor - Chepstow 3.25 6/1 Ew
You'll know that I do go for a lightly-raced horse who's converting to chasing and here's one that fits the bill. SS has raced just four times under rules , is bred to chase and to chase over 3m or more. On his chasing debut he was nearest at finish over 2m6f and this 3m will be more suitable. At 6/1, it's a good ew price.
Fontaine Collonges - 3.09 Kempton 5/1.
Although he didn't win by much lto at Haydock, I had the impression that there will be more to come from this one and that the run would bring him on considerably. It was the step up in distance that was the key at Haydock and I'm hoping, over 3m again, he can improve again.
Cheddleton - 2.45 Wetherby 4/1 Ew
Well, I got the 4/1 last night but am intrigued that he's been backed this morning down to 5/2. That doesn't augur well imo, since horse of mine that are backed during the day invariably lose; be warned lol.
He's a horse I've been sweet on for over two seasons now and although his recent record doesn't jump out at us, his second to Editeur Du Gite last December looks head and shoulders above today's field. that run was achieved off 149. 4Lbs lighter today and he looks like he should be in the shake - up. TBH, he like softer ground so that must be entertained as a drawback. Given his current price, he's probably not good value at all but I'd thought I'd share my picks anyway.
3 X singles
Ew Trixie
Lastly, I have to have a couple of bets in the Welsh National, a race I love but seldom win. Not perturbed, I choose:
Musical Slave - 2.50 Chepstow 20/1
If I'm honest, I wouldn't think his breeding shouts 3m 6f but he has a look about him and his last run behind The Big Breakaway gave some sort of encouragement as does the form of last season's Whitbread (365) at Sandown, where he ran on up the hill behind Hewick over 3m 5f, which looks good in the context of this race. 18/1 looks attractive enough for 5 places.
I'll also have a little pop with Gary Moore's Movethechains 2.50 Chepstow 14/1, who, after 4 Lingfield wins and a mark that's risen 48Lbs since the first, could be anything. At 14/1, I'll pay to see if he's up to this.
As I wrote, nothing of major strength to go to war with today but I thought I'd share anyway over this festive tide.
Good luck and fun with whatever you do.
