Good morning.

Well, what a fallow period it's been for me over the last month or so. I have set my stall out to limit my betting to better grade horses, vowing not to enter any class 5 and 6 - rated animals in my horses to follow. I've also tried very hard not to be tempted into backing in races 'to watch them go round' for fun. In fact, bets like that, for me, are ruinous and the little losses do accumulate, don't they.

What this means, in effect is that just about all my bets will be weekend shots and even having said that, precious few of my noted horses have been engaged.

Talking of lower class races; this is the time of year when it certainly can pay to back horses in those lower grades if one of my noted nags is dropped in class.

Today I have one which, I'm afraid, looks like it's the bet of my season thus far.

I expect you might understand my reticence to publish it on here because I'm afeared of 'putting the mockers on it'. However, It has, in my opinion, a fierce chance today and I'll not be put off, come what may. Naturally, as it's such a strong fancy, I must back it but expect it will be turned over. a sentiment many of us will be familiar with, I'm sure.

Anzac Day - 6.55 Ffos Las 10/1 Ew

I first noted this fellow at Goodwood in May. I made this note:

24/05/25 Goodwood Cl2 1m6f H/cp Good OR 88

This was a pleasing effort in the 1st time blinkers. He only got going late but I don’t think today was the plan. I see he’s entered in the Pitman’s Derby. The breeding suggests that 2m isn’t out of the question by any means and the late, untroubled headway augured well.

Although I intimated in that note that further might suit, I wouldn't be adamant about a need to step up from 1m 6f and I'm quite happy with the distance here.
Now, that Goodwood (Cl2) race does look particularly good in the light of today's contest and I cannot, for the life of me, understand why he's priced so generously. Yes, the bookies don't often get it wrong but I'll not be dissuaded, come what may and it wouldn't surprise me if he's backed before the off but what do I know?

So: 'Bet of the season'. A bold claim which certainly does invite any amount of egg on face, eh.

Good luck.

Haha! yesterday's result was painted in the darkest shade of black comedy.

I suppose I've been backing horses for so long that such an outcome was, in a way, predicted in amongst the glowing write up of the horse's chances. I have to say that I've really become inured to these setbacks and these days can only laugh at the twisted humour of what I call the Betfair Sprites. These little imps have been riding shotgun with me since the start of my love affair with horse racing and exist to remind me, with gleeful monotony, of just where I stand when it comes to form study, race-watching and betting prowess. Yesterday, the little buggers were howling into their satchels; the cackles have hardly subsided even as I write.

Hey-ho.

So, stone last and toiling. I find it difficult to understand how the gelding managed to 'run' so badly. The BHA reported that he 'was never travelling'. I could have told them that. I'm none the wiser but I suppose I can reflect by remembering other such cases when a horse has gone on to win, even the race after. In the end, though, I'll not let this mini catastrophe convince me that that my racing eyes have gone.

I box on and wait for those Betfair Sprites to tend to me with just a tad more sympathy. Granted: that could be a long wait ('smirk' emoji required here).
